I'm a Christian and I tend to agree with you.
I have been to Churches that meet in classrooms, halls etc.
Church is the people, not the building.
Christ is coming back for His Bride, not a man-made structure or building!
I don't see a need for all that unnecessary expenditure and yes when there are Soo many needy people - believers or not.
And the Missionaries and their feilds need So much more!
People are without Bibles.
Maybe if that money actually went to the poor, there would be alot more believers?
Jesus said to feed and clothe the needy!

there is absolutely nothing wrong with going to church. What if the entire United states got up one hour early to improve living conditions then the entirety of the country would be happy. However that is not the American way. I do not know these needy people. How can one judge they are deserving and wont just loose all they have gained. even so the spirit of capitalism is to work for it yourself and be proud of what you made. if you don't like the way things are then maybe you should get your head out of the clouds and move to china. People have the right to choose how to spend there time. "Freedom is never free." sacrifices are made every day to by unfortunate Americans so that America can remain free and not be at the level of the lowest citizen. people have the right to go to church just as much I have the right to state my ideals on the internet. instead of this I could spoil some drunk and build him a home just so he could loose it and not give back to the economy. By living our normal lives we are helping the economy more than we would by building homes or starting food drives.

In some cases ministries lose site of what their original goal was. But most of the time, you need a place to worship. The bigger the place, the more people can worship together. Most big churches have a lot of outreaches both local and abroad. But they wouldn't have the money or manpower to that if they had no place to come together in and grow in. The churches do more to help than the government, look at how much money they waste. At least the churches I know are making a difference in peoples lives. When Katrina hit, more Christan relief organizations were there to help and rebuild then government sponsored ones.

Churchs do help a lot of the needy. But there just isnt enough money to help everybody. The sad part of it is that a lot of the earlier churches used fear( the devil, hell, sin, a vengful god) to get people into their churches wich in turn they would put money in the collection baskets. This is how many of the lavish churches were built.People were just greedy. Sadly you still see this today in many religions.

I have been trying to be more mild in my answers but this one gets to me.
Churches today are consumed with greed. There thoughts do not follow the poor only how they can maintain or increase the cash flow. Yes some have programs for the poor with food or clothing drives but that is as far as it goes.
Worse, they do not provide for them spiritually. The word of the Bible is far removed from them. The clergy haven't followed it for years so why should they teach it?
Billions of dollars of treasure is stored in the basements of the Vatican and there it will stay if they have anything to say about it. The poor are welcome to eat dirt.

Why are millions of dollars spent on schools and roads when there is needy in our society?
The answer is because its impossible to do the things we do without facilities. Can my church of 600 meet in your living room? Can we have our easter services with +1000 in attendance in your backyard? And who says churches dont give to the needy and to missionarys?
The only one that needs to justify anything is you with you your ignorant assumptions.

I don't have to justify. We spend thousands (personally and in my very small church) each year on helping those you mentioned.
You will also find these facts interesting:
The following are some statistics about typical Christian donors:
1) Religious observers (only 38 percent of all Americans) donate two-thirds of all charitable dollars in the United States,
2) Religious observers (those who attend weekly services) donate 3.4 percent of income annually, while nonreligious people give 1.1 percent to 1.4 percent,
3) Households that donate to both religious congregations and secular organizations donate over three times ($2,247) more than do households that donate to only secular organizations ($623) per year,

Yes. We take care of the poor and the needy too. If you are looking for people who waste a lot of money on decor and do not take care of the poor also, go after Hollywood or somewhere like that. We lavish our churches with our love for God and share it with our neighbor.
I would be completely ashamed to use anything less than gold to place the body and precious blood of my Savior on.

Consider the costly gifts the magi gave to the infant Jesus. Consider the costly ointment that Mary used to wash Jesus feet before his trial and crucifixion. Judas criticized Mary for that and asked Jesus to forbid her. Jesus chastised Judas and said, Let her be. The poor you have always with you, but the Son of Man shall not always be with you. She has saved this ointment and anointed me unto my burial.
The point is that we honor the Lord by offering to him our finest efforts and create memorials to His glory. He blesses us for our sacrifice on His behalf. Yes, we take care of the poor as well while at the same time offering our best gifts to the Lord. He wants us to sacrifice our time, talents and resources to His work, whether amongst the poor or the parishioners who use the churches and temples for His work. Those that attend those fine structures have their own thoughts lifted to the heavens as they enter the Lord's houses.
Don't deny us our places of worship that are built to His glory.

I always wondered about that, too. The chapel in my high school had solid gold chalices and plates for services, and the school presented gold-embroidered robes to the bishop, but our textbooks were from the 1970s, and the school offered no financial aid. Why is it to important to have gold chalices? I don't think Jesus used gold at the last supper...
