I hate it when I start to say something and someone else starts at the same time. How do you fix that?

Longer pauses. I grant you it's very frustrating when you think someone has made their statement and you begin to reply, and they look at you with disdain and say "Let me finish!" So give your own style the addition of long pauses before you answer, maybe even long enough for the other person to say, "Well, don't you have anything to say?" If you get this from the same person who said, "Let me finish" earlier in the same argument (and make no mistake, they are feeling argumentative when they get like that), reply with "I was waiting to see if you had finished."

Watch for signs that they are done speaking and waiting for a reaction. For example, if someone stops talking and sort of relaxes in their chair or moves around or something, it's kind of like they've said all they want to say and now they're going to just chill for a while and listen, you know? And also if someone picks up their drink and takes a drink and does not start talking again immediately afterward, they're done. But, if it looks like they are just taking a drink because their throat is dry, or if they do it in mid-sentence (duh) then wait because they aren't done yet. Just watch for stuf like that. Long pauses, ending a story ("so yeah, thats how it happened"), stuff like that. You can usually tell if you really watch.

Sometimes that just happens, but normally there is a certain flow to our conversations, experience with this just like anything else is the key...picking up on keywords, noticing verbal punctuation and inflection...or just use a walkie-talkie and say "Roger" or "over" when you're done.

you can't really, when that happens you just have to either say " go ahead" or you just have to keep talking , there is no secret formula or way to get around this, it is part of the human experience.

When someone says "This one time, I..." it's usually not a good time to start your own story.

You must first learn how to listen and pay attention
