You can remove old carpet with a pry bar, and box cutters. Start at doorway, pry up old carpet little by little, and you can cut smaller sections out for easier removal with box cutters, utility knife.

a good carpet knife is best, but a regular $1.00 utility knife with a few sharp blades will do the trick. Just did this, past weekend. Just cut in small enough strip to throw in a trash bag and good luck.

I used a regular (sharp) kitchen knife. I found that the chef's knife made nice straight lines because it was a little more stiff, and the thin, narrow steak knife made cuts that tended to curve. I sliced that nasty carpet into 2' x 2' squares and the garbage pickup guys had no problem with it. (Especially since I set them in packing boxes I no longer needed.) I did have to re-sharpen my knives after I was finished.

A utility knife works well, a carpet knife works a little better but are hard to find.

my ex wife used a serrated steak knife (maybe a bread knife). Ripped through a carpet quicker than a utility knife.
