In most cases when the Pill is taken correctly, it regulates your menstrual cycle so you have regular periods. The Pill works by preventing ovulation. However, no form of birth control is 100% effective except for abstinence. It is possible to get pregnant while taking the Pill, especially if you have not taken it at the same time every day, have missed days of taking it, or have taken some type of medication that interferes with the Pill's effectiveness. There is that small percentage of times when pregnancy occurs while on the Pill even when it is taken correctly. I am one of those people. Our children were 17, 15, and 12 and I had been taking birth control pills reliably for 11 years when we discovered I was pregnant. Surprise! I did not find out I was pregnant until I was 17 weeks along. The first month after conception, I had a perfectly normal period, the second month was normal as well. The 3rd month my period was lighter and shorter than normal. I had no idea I was pregnant. I had no typical symptoms. I was experiencing stomach pain when I ate accompanied by heart burn, loss of appetite (so I was losing weight), but no nauseau or vomiting. My doctor initially diagnosed me with Irritable Bowel Syndrome! We were all surprised when she did my yearly physical and found out my real problem was I was pregnant! Of course, that day, I stopped taking my Pills and stopped having periods as well. Right after our baby was born, my husband had a vasectomy! No trusting the Pill after that. LOL Our kids are now 28, 25, 22, and 9. We have a 7 week old grandson. My husband and I will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary on June 25. There's nothing like a little unexpected change in your life's plans to make or break a marriage. In our case, we decided to look at this "little surprise" in our life as a blessing and our marriage has thrived because of it. ADDED: As a little clarification, the period you have while on the Pill is a normal period. The hormones in the Pill only prevent ovulation, it does not stop the monthly preparation of blood and tissue your body makes in preparation for a possible baby. Whether you ovulate and the egg is not fertlized or you don't ovulate, the result is the same - there is no fertilized egg so there is no need for the accumulated blood and tissue, thus you have your period. The hormones in the Pill mess up this cycle of events. It is common for women who get pregnant on the Pill and continue to take the Pill because they don't know they are pregnant to have one or more periods until they stop taking the Pill. It is rare, but some women do have monthly bleeding throughout their pregnancy. It is a hormonal thing. Birth control pills have an effectiveness rate of 96-99%, so it is possible to get pregnant even if you take them 100% correctly 100% of the time.

You can still get pregnant while on the pill. But that usually only happens if you mess something up ie: taking antibiotics also, skipping pills, or doubling up more than twice a month, not using a back-up method during the first month, etc. etc.

Most people still get a period while on the pill. I did for the 6 years I was on it. It's not a period like the egg & lining since you're not ovulating, it's what's known as a forced period.

Edit:
If you've been taking the pills properly, then you're not pregnant. The only way you can get pregnant on the pills is if you mess them up. If you think you're pregnant, then take a test. But the pills won't force you to have a period, if you're pregnant. Only if you're not pregnant.

When you are on the pill you will still have a period if you stop taking pills with hormones in them. Many pills have a week or so worth of placebo pills, and that is when you'll have your period. If you miss pills, or take them too late and don't use back up protection, it is possible to get pregnant with some pills. The best thing to do would be to ask your doctor, and read the information that comes packaged with the month's worth of pills.

Depending on what pill, you should have sugar pills your last week which is the week you will menstrate. These pills are only so you can remember when your new pack will start. AND YES if you are not careful you can still become pregnant on the pill, i did. Make sure you take it at the same time everyday and be careful because some antibiotics can affect the pill.

You will NOT under a normal circumstance have a period if you are pregnant regardless of whether or not you were or were not on the pill 1) because you body stops ovulating once you become pregnant and 2) the sugar pill tricks your brain into thinking it's not pregnant so your body flushes itself (your period) but you can't trick your brain into thinking your not pregnant when you really are because even if you stopped taking the pills your body would still be holding all of the pregnancy hormones which tells your body not to menstrate... :) Under a normal cirmcumstance because some women for whatever reason do have some sort of periods during their pregnancy.

The pill, when taken properly, will prevent you from getting pregnant. However, it's not 100% fool proof. There are women who have gotten pregnant while on the pill.

The pill gives you a regular cycle. You take 3 weeks of pills... then take 1 week of non-active pills... this is the week you'll have your period.

However, if you'd like to skip a period... don't take that last week of pills and just start in on your next pack. My doctor said I could do this up to 3 months... and it wouldn't hurt me... which is kinda nice in the summer when you've got BBQ and swimming.. and boyfriends! :)
