yes I have lived in Queens and manhattan. This is the melting pot of the US so there is no generalization of what NYC is. THere are some beautiful, rich areas, poor areas, dangerous areas, it really all depends. Check MLS.com and if you see really cheap houses then that means the area is not so good.

first, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens are not cities; they are boroughs in the city of New York (Manhattan and Staten Island round out the 5 boros)
I live in the Bronx, and I could tell you that certain parts of the Bronx are safe (mostly in the North Bronx) and certain parts of the Bronx are not safe (the south Bronx). You can go to Foxtons.com to find houses in either of the 3 boros.

I am from Brooklyn. It's a great city to live in, with alot of diversity and culture, and tons of stuff to do. Also, the close proximity to NYC (Manhattan) leaves you with endless options for work and recreation. A great website where you will get literally hundreds of listings for RE is:

i live in queens. its nice here. in certain parts..you have to check that out.
www.homes.com have a lot of listings. if you want to live in a nice area thats busy live in queens. if you want quite and close to the beaches move to long island. if you want to get shot..move to brooklyn or the bronx. manhattan is very very expensive to live there but if you can afford it check out the eastside. staten island is also another part of the city...but it smells and its expensive so you dont want to live there.
what nyc like?
people are really rude here. but theres nice people too, theres a lot of oppurtunitys to meet new people, and have fun
if you need a mortgage, let me know :)
good luck.

Those burrows are mostly residential burrows. there are of course businesses such as food stores etc. in the Bronx you can visit the Zoo (a very nice zoo too) or go to the botanical gardens. other than that there isn't much to do there. My grandparents live in queens and i visit them often.
