Does the order of the Creation story hinder your reconciliation of Genesis and evolution? Specifically, plants coming before the Sun?

((This is not a challenge, just a question out of curiosity))

Dee Emarr: You're correct. I believe the order is light, plants, Sun/stars, animals...

Good question, and no. My belief as many others...is that teh bible is merely a ton of wives tales and stories woven together. I cold get into it for ours on end but the bottom line is. God did NOT create man from dirt and women from his rib. God merely created the enviornment in which species could evolve, survive and prosper. After all, he is god :)

No...even if Christian Evolutionists took a literal approach like you are saying (which we don't), light was still created on day 1. But it's all missing the point of the story anyway to think of it in those terms.

Gen 1 is written by the Priestly Source. Genesis is written by at least 4 different sources: Yehwist, Elohist, Deuteronomist, and Priestly. The Priestly (P) source is very concerned with order and structure. The story of creation here tells us about order coming through God's power.

1) Light is created. It is separated from darkness.
4) Sun/Moon/Stars are created.

2) Sky
5) Birds

3) Land/Water formations
6) Land/Water animals.

Christian Evolutionists can see that the story is not about science. They see the beauty in the story and the awesome way in which God can work in the world. How God provides for us before we were even created. It shows God's love for creation. ("God saw that it was good." "God blessed them.")

Christian Evolutionists do not accept the way people literally interpret the Creation Stories. Your question assumes they do.

I'm still kind of iffy on the subject of Evolution. Things make sense, but things can also make sense and you see proof in the creationist point of view too.

I think for all practical purposes, does it even matter? Who cares if we were created by God just as we are now 6000 years ago, or if we evolved from Apes.

There are still a lot of things that evolution can't answer like the big jump to Cro-Magnon (or was it Neanderthal?) from the monkey types.

There are several Christians who feel that the story of Creation was just a way for the Jews to explain the way the world was created. The Jewish word for Day can also mean a long time, so the world could have been created in six long times (how ever long that could be). There are a lot of theories, but I don't really pay attention because they don't apply in every day Christianity.

No contest at all. Nothing in the bible was written before the event. No nothing.

Ignorance of what is definately shows. Not that the people that wrote such things were stupid or just plain dumb. No they were ot and were very aware of what was going on. the thing is tat scienve has improved a little since then.

No the man on the turtle does not hold up the earth. Well something like that.

The first thing God brought into being was light so plants did not come first. And to the poster who said it was written before they knew the earth was round, you really need to read your Bible.

Job 26:7 - He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.

Isaiah 40:22 - He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.

There are numerous references in the Bible of knowledge that no one could have had at that time. Just one more way we know it is the Word of God.

I belive if God and the Son. I wouldn't call myself an evolutionist but I agree that it is a possibility. I'm not saying that God wasn't the creator, but IF evolution is true then God made each species special and it's own BUT made it come from another species. I'm not sure if I'm saying this right or if it is making sense to you but it's sort of like

God makes the amoeba
God make the jellyfish, from/related to the amoeba
God makes the starfish, from/related to the amoeba and jellyfish
God makes the fish, from/related to the amoeba, jellyfish and starfish
God makes the lizard, from/related to the amoeba, jellyfish, starfish and fish
etc and the list goes on.

I know that that the animals on that list is not scientifically/biblically correct at all but it's just an example of what I mean.

No, there is no contradiction there. If you notice, God seperated the light from the dark prior to creating the plants. Even though the light did not come from the sun, I am sure it was enough to prevent the plants from dying for a day (24 hours). The sun, moon and planets were created next.

The entire creation process was controlled by God. I am sure he knew what he was doing.

Nope not at all, God's day is not our tiny 24 hours and it took an eternity to create the universe. What Christians objected to in the original Darwin theory was that man was only an animal that evolved. Somewhere in there Darwin forgot to mention that God gave man an immortal soul. It was really the only objection to whole theory but from what I readon YA it seems its stretched a bit further since then with some groups.

The problem about the sun is actually mirrored in the way Astronomers explain what happens when a proto-sun turns mainline.

To get to the parts pertaining to this question, you can skip the first two paragraphs. Be sure to read the entire part about the sun. (three pages)

Plants need light - not specifically the light of our sun. Light was first - before the plants. According Genesis.

I see no problem.
