My fiance's grandmother said she will not be attending our wedding if I get a wedding band. She is from east coast, old money, and says its classless for men to wear wedding bands. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Sounds to me like she is just looking for a reason not to come to your wedding. I am from the East Coast and most men with money have a more extravagant wedding band. Someone needs to sit the old bat down and find out what her real problem is. Does she have something against you or her granddaughter?

Huh? Where in the world is she getting this? If you want to wear a wedding band, then wear one. If you don't, then it's no big deal either if that's okay with your future wife.

But something like that is just nuts...too many people are too concerned with traditions and what's "always done" at weddings. It's about you and your fiance, and you are the only people that matter.

And for the record, I've never ever heard that before. The only think I can think is that it comes from when weddings were more an exchange of property instead of a union.

That's ridiculous!! Every married man I know has a ring on his finger. It's to symbolize that you are bonded to one another. This could very well be an opinion of her time. Men didn't really start wearing wedding bands until World War Two.

Here are a couple of things I found on it:

"Do men wear wedding rings?
The practice of men wearing wedding rings is relatively new. Up until the middle of the twentieth century, it was mostly only women who wore wedding rings, perhaps a reminder of the days when women were regarded as property, or perhaps a harmless custom akin to women wearing engagement rings that their husbands do not. When World War Two broke out and many young men faced lengthy separations from their wives, men began wearing wedding bands as a symbol of their marriages and a reminder of their wives.

It was pure romance, a gesture of love and affection that has happily survived into modern times. The vast majority of men wear wedding bands these days." ~From Atlantis Rings

At any rate, it is ultimately your decision. Not hers. I suggest you sit down with your fiance and ask her how she feels.

I am from the east coast and everyone has a wedding band.... I don't know what she is talking about. Sounds like a nutty old lady to me! Are you from a American?? Is this a cultural thing? It's not an east coast thing.

Heck if anything we are gaudy with our wedding bands. Most people I know have a ton of diamond in their band and in their engagement rings.

Your fiance's grandmother is sadly misinformed. It's customary for the groom to get a wedding band at the same time when the bride get her's, it's part of wedding tradition.

is she a kennedy? lol... maybe the men in her family like to get a little on the side, and therefore, a wedding band would just be an expensive inconvenience in the pursuit of other women...

i'm kidding... sweetie, i've never heard of this, but it seems like the woman must have some sort of grudge against the marriage if she is making an excuse like that. your fiancee should really referee this one, i think. it's his place to stand up for your marriage to his own family, and if he agrees with you that a wedding band is the way you two are going to show your committment, then his grandmother should respect that.

good luck with your new marriage to "old money"! :)

I too am an east coaster, my family has been here since the Nordics came down with Erik The Viking (well before the pilgrims) I can honestly say that I have NEVER heard such a thing. I think its classless if he doesnt wear one, I equate men who dont wear theirs (unless required my job restrictions) to be trying to get away with less than noble behavior.

I am on the East Coast. I have NEVER heard of such a crazy thing. Has she ever heard the term "with this ring, I thee wed"?

She is either a nut or cranky and wants to start something. Either way, just say "ok, whatever" and completely disregard her. Don't let her bully you.

I have NEVER heard that! Thats is the dumbest thing I ever heard...talk about close minded, I mean shes gonna blow off the wedding over a peice of jewelry? Sounds like she's looking for reasons to not come, you could comply, but it sounds like she'll nit-pick something else, so I say screw the ole bat and enjoy your day! Congrats and good luck with it!

No, I've never heard that.

Whether or not the groom chooses to wear a wedding ring is a personal decision. If your fiance's grandmother chooses to snub you because of this, then all I can say is she must be looking mighty hard for an excuse not to approve.
