In fact, yes they can find out what specific procedure was performed. The responses before mine were semi incorrect. Every medical procedure known to man has been assigned a 5 digit procedure code (known as a CPT code) which are used by both dotor's offices and insurance companies to indicate allowables, co-pays, deductibles, etc. Depending on what insurance company it is, the EOBs can, in fact, place the 5 digit CPT on the EOB!! Also, the on-line has the information and since you are on their coverage....your information shows up on their account. Regardless of who pays the co-pays/deductibles/etc. THEY pay the premiums!!!! Depending on what procedure code your doctor's office uses as well as what code the lab (usually not the same place) uses, can very well indicate the specific procedure you had done. However, if your doctor's office and the lab used a "general lab code" (eg pap smear, general health profile, etc.) and your parent's called them to inquire, they would not be able to find out the specifics due to patient/doctor confidientiality (not HIPAA).
But, if you are 24 years old....what say would they have regarding your life style choices? I'm thinking they "know" more than you think (or give them credit for). Besides, it is best that they know that you are at least taking precautions.

They wont know exactly what kind of tests you had. They would receive an EOB (Explanation of Benefits) which shows the date of the visit, the facility how much the visit was and if there was lab work, nothing specific though.
You can always ask the doctor you're going to go see how they do their billing it also depends on that... if they itemize things then it may show on the EOB such as "Pap/Cultures", etc.

Hmmm, not sure what insurance you have but when I receive my statements from my insurance after visiting the doctor it just says that I was there, not what was done. This is the same if I went to the psychiatrist. It just says that I was there but not if I was in a session or was doing a test for ADD.

No. EOBs (Explanation of benefits) may show "lab/diagnostic" procedures, but unless you TELL them, they won't know. They can call the insurance company and the doctors' office until they're blue in the face, but because of the HIPAA law, your privacy is protected.

They'll find out that SOMETHING was done, on the explanation of benefits, unless you're on an HMO and your primary care physician does the test 'in house', then an explanation of benefits won't be issued.

They will get a bill describing the claim, it will show a general service description, for example pathology or office visit, but it won't show what was actully tested.

they may if the doctor send bills to them even not as bills but as statements..but with the lab stuff it is usually all in codes...i would ask your doctor about this and see what your parents may end up finding out......and although having sex may upset your parents you are 24..you are an adult...and i would tell them you just wanted to get tested as a precaution....
