Daddy lives at home with us, and she is with him every night after work, and on weekends. I told her about heaven as well, where my parents live.

I asked her, and she said Allen's daddy died. Allen is a child in her class. Thanks so much in advance for advice.

she probably just got confused a little and took up an emotion she saw a friend give off in school...maybe she doens't get it yet, and I don't blame her...when I was six in 1st grade, i used to draw pictures of graveyards and tombstones with peoples names on it I knew, not because I thought or wanted them dead, i just got the idea from a picture I saw, and thought it was drawn well...now I realize what people must have thought. but she will be fine, just keep assuring her that daddy is not dead..best luck.

What doesn't she seem to understand?
Does she see "death" on TV, movies, etc.?

Is dad around?
Was it her way of understanding him being gone?

Has anyone in her life died?
Has she seen a body, been to a funeral, etc.

I suggest you start talking to her by asking her to tell you what death means to her. Give her information based on what she tells you.

There are some good books available.
Contact a local mortuary for more information.

P.S. Has she heard someone talk about death?

Share with her that when someone dies, they never come back. Dad goes but has comes home.

P.S.S. Sounds like you have good dialog going!!!

E-mail if you would like to.

TAKE CARE!!!

It is an attention factor. Really nothing to worry about. Allen's dad has passed on and he is getting a lot of attention. Your sister is just trying to get the same kind of attention that Allen is receiving. Nothing to worry about. She will grow out of it.

Where is her daddy ? Is he not around ? He should be told what she is saying and start being a parent to her. Remember it takes two parents to have a child and it helps if two parents raise a child. They don't have to live together.

Where is her dad if he's not dead? Are you able/willing to clarify where Daddy actually is?

Tell her that death is when a person's spirit leaves their body. Their body is buried (or cremated, but dunno if you want to go there with a 6-yr-old), but their spirit goes to heaven. (A person's spirit is who they really are, the body is just the part we see.) The dead still exist, but they're in heaven with God....

Then clarify that Daddy is ___________. He hasn't died yet, his spirit is still in side his body, in/at (wherever he is). Maybe find a globe or a map and show her where he is. (Be sure to let her know that Heaven isn't on any map...)

Did you ask her, Why she thinks her dad is dead? I'd be interested that. It may help to explain why its not so.
