i'm trying to fix my uncle's old sony vaio desktop. It's model number PCV-90. Anyway, sony only helped me once, but no more. The problem is I need to download the driver for the CD ROM (D drive), b/c the computer is no longer recognizing it. Also, I need to download the driver for USB b/c the computer isn't picking up on it, when i plug something USB in one of the ports. these are the only two problems....can someone tell me if this website even contains these drivers, does the BIOS update help me reinstall these missing components?

You need to go to the sony site and see what they have posted there. If it is not there it is not supported any more and your are probably unable to get the drivers or an updated BIOS.

A BIOS is a basic input output system; it is more like firmware than an operating system. Makers update BIOS much like they upgrade firmware. Updates to BIOS do not include device driver updates because BIOS is fundamental to the pc operation not to the operation of devices plugged into it.

To try and comment on your questions. As has been said a real bios virus is unusual nowadays. How, and what are the results when you try to enter bios settings, or do you really mean access bios.If so how. As to the motherboard you will be very lucky to find another make to fit into your laptop case. You will probably have to buy the one for your series even. What series Vaio have you got The use of DBAN will probably have completely wiped your Hard drive, so the installation of the O/S will now be a little more difficult. Unless a copy of the recovery software has been take to CD/DVD then it will have to be obtained from Sony. You say that you have tried Linux install. How far does that get before things go wrong If what you say is true and you do have a virus in the bios then just get another motherboard. If your original one has 512 MB of Ram it sounds as if it could be a few years old Also consider what Vomit has said re RAM. Nothing you can do about the video card as it is integrated

Last time I installed Win 98. You first place the Microsoft Boot Disk in the floppy drive. This installs the drivers to allow the computer to read the CD ROM drive.

Win 95 Boot Disks; Download here

That model computer was introduced 11 years ago.

Sony PCV-90 Tower; Pentium-200 MHz; 128MB RAM (max); 3GB hard drive. Cost about $3000 new.

It is not worth anything. Microsoft no longer supports Win 95 or Win 98. Trust me buy a new one.

For example:

Your BIOS is your Basic Input/Output System, it pretty much tells your computer what to turn on and what to function for usage. Updating your BIOS can fix problems like you are explaining but it would be easier to just update your drivers. You should be able to go to sonys site and download the drivers without any issue.
