Send your resume to ad agencies. You will start at the bottom in traffic maybe and work your way up. Good Luck!

35 yrs exp in advertising
I have 2 degrees.
I ran my own ad agency.
I was an ad consultant for 25 years as well. so I should know what I'm talking about.
Call up a local ad agency you might find in the phone book and ask if you could come by and talk to the human resources department. Tell them you are interested in interning and would like to talk to the director about job opportunities. They will tell you what advertising is all about and what to expect.
But if you want a job, you'll need a portfolio or a degree or you can start as a basic assistant and work your way up.
But first see if it's really for you by talking to people already working in the industry.
Then, good luck.

Advertising is really easy to break into - all you do is be creative when trying to sell something, even if you live in a small town.
www.ihirepublishing.com , Features publishing job listings for writers, publishers, editors, and graphic designers.
It helps to build your portfolio. Even if you think you have no job opportunities where you live, think again. Make and take pictures of creative yard sale signs. Put a classified ad in the paper and keep a copy of it, along with a journal of who answered and how long it took for someone to answer. Help out friends who own their own businesses with advertising a special event, or even drawing up invitations to a special event, and keep them in your portfolio. When you go to your job interview, show them what you have done besides your school work. You'll have a better chance of getting hired that way.
As for getting bored, (by the way - please use spell check. There is a big difference between getting BORED and getting BOARD.) You won't. There are always deadlines, always something new, there are failed ideas and ideas that keep going for years. You can always refuse to work with a product you don't endorse yourself, you know.
Good Luck to you.

Hi Louise,
Theres different aspects of advertising you can get into -
client serivicing, media and creative.
Creative is typically the most 'glam', but its very hard to get into - you need a huge portfolio, and starting from the bottom you'll be on a very low wage - AND for a long time if your work is no good!
Media is great, you need to be somewhat good with numbers. Theres also a lot of perks if you work in a big city (lunches, outing, etc!).
Right now, the easiest area to get into in Digital media (internet, mobile, etc) because its so under-resourced...this is a growing sector of the media industry, personally I wouln't want to work in TV, magazine, etc - its all going downhill. Digital is the place to be!
An internship is a huge help! Thats where I started, and then fell into digital media because TV was hard to get into. Now I;m glad I went the digital route - as the budgets get bigger (which YOY they are), so will your paycheck.
Also, with TV/magazine buying they often look for hard personalities - people who can do a hard sale and negotiate the lowest prices...that just wasn't me.

Hello Louise, advertising is such a dynamic industry there is no possibly way you would get bored with it. There are lot of local conferences and shows that you can attend to get a true feel for the industry: The Affiliate Summit, Ad-Tech, SES - and the list goes on.
One of our companies is actively hiring Affiliate Managers so if you have an interest and an outgoing personality, let me know.
