The first rain and heat of summer have passed, and its time for mushrooms hunting. Ive tossed around the idea in the past, but figured id post it here to you guys for help. Should I tell the farmer that im a student looking to collect mushrooms for a mycology project and see if (s)he would be ok with that, or just forget about it and trespass. im not too sure whether or not the farmer would be suspicious, but ive hunted before without asking, and the result was ok. any thoughts? please no answers telling me not to do it thnx =]

Definitely get approval before you trespass. If he's real country, he could shoot you. Be respectful of his home, even if it's not his house.

As you will be going onto the farmer's property, I would ask permission. I don't know what state you are in, but if your state would allow the farmer to shoot tresspassers on the assumption that you were there to steal cattle, you could have more problems then just being arrested for trespassing. I can't imagine the farmer saying no unless he uses the feces for fertilizer.

Yes you should ask for anyone's permission before entering their territory otherwise it is called trespassing. The Farmer may sell the cow feces to other farmers or may want to charge you for the time on his land. Don't forget that the Farmer's land is his livelihood. Here in Spain farmers sell goat feces for people's gardens.

I would always ask. Even if you haven't had problems in the past I would go to the farmer and ask him to sign a little card that says:
_________ has permission to hunt for mushrooms on my land from (start date) to (end date).

This will protect you if you have problems with the police or nosey neighbors.

I suggest you ask permission first. He may have a trained, dog, cat, mouse that may attack you. You would be at fault.

What about asking to if okay to collect a few pies - for a garden - that way you can take the whole pie (if said mushroom is present) and relocate it to a more convenient location for future growth?

Just a thought.

definitely get permission! Going onto a cattle ranch or farm without an OK from The land owner is a really good way to get shot.

I come from the city so i'm no longer conscious of this pastime yet i might parent that in the event that they performed a pastime the place the cows have been being jiggled around, they might have butter as a exchange of milk.

if you are honestly looking for mushrooms for a project and not for your own personal pleasure then you should definately ask before trespassing. you don't want to get shot

Even my country relatives out in the piney woods of Mississippi would know what you were up to, so I would say look discreetly and take only what you need. I hope you know what you are looking for, don't poison yourself.
