I live in Shanghai and do business in Kunming the capital of Yunnan, it is a natural place of great beauty, you should be ok during the 2008 Olympics, it should not play too much into that area, it is very cheap living there, food - just "pennies", you could spend about $10 per day if you ate out for the three meals of the day, housing - you can rent a three bedroom place for about 1500-1800 rmb per month, hotel would be a little more, Kunming, Li Jiang, Da Li, Teng Chong are the major cities, public transporation is good, buses, taxis are cheap, from town to town is alittle more tricky, Yunnan is mountainous and still not as modern as places like Shanghai and Beijing, there are tons of places to go and see check out sites below

I spent about a week in Yunnan not too long ago, it's a beautiful place. The major city there is Kunming, which is fairly close to the Stone Forest, (a must see), and there many lakes and mountainous areas in this region. Like anywhere in China, trains can take you almost from any city to where you want to go. There are many "minority people" who live in this region, and visits to their villages are a popular attraction. I wouldn't think you have to worry about next year being an Olympic year, as Yunnan is quite a distance from Beijing, plus May and June is a couple of months before the Olympics. You might look for websites about Kunming and Yunnan Province to get a good idea of accomodation costs, food and train travel are always fairly cheap. Have fun.

I have been to Yunnan once, but I am still longing for a second trip. Kunming is the capital city of that province, almost every tourist from out of province must land at that city first. The stone forest, called Shi lin in Chinese, is really a Must-see, and there are many beautiful stories behind also.
What I strongly recommend is a city called Li Jiang, where the locals are almost all minorities. They have their own language and lifestyle, but it's hard for you distinguish them from average chinese. There is a famous snow mountain called Yu Long Xue Shan not far from this city, it is a Must see also. mmm, what else , maybe, the Women town, where the role of women and men are just opposite to the outside world. Finally, there are tremendous amounts of fun waiting for you. One trip is far away from enough. You will see!

when you say yunnan i guess you mean greece right?if you do mean greece well the best season to visit this country is june or semptember for two basic reasons: first because the weather is perfect and second the beaches are not so crowded like july or august.you gonna need like 50euros per day although if you are young and <> you can do it with 20-30 euros.the transportation is good and ships arrive for the islands every day.the public transportation is well organised and i dont think you will have a problem.the nice places are many but i think that the greek islands are the best ones like anafi, santorini, fournoi, psara, kimolos etc the islands are so many and so beautiful that is difficult for me to say.i dont think you gonna have any problems with thieves or serial killers haha!!we are good people although some may try to cheat you a little bit.anyway i coyld tell you lots of things but a goog travel guide can help you a lot.have a great time with your vacation and if you need help let me know

Welcome to China - my home country!

Yunan is truly a gem in the southwest China!

I will recommend three places which I always recommend to my clients whoever want to go to Yunan.
1. Kunming, the capital of Yunan Province, also nick named" Spring City" due to its pleasant weather all year round. The Stone Forest is famous for its reputation of "World Karst Landscape Museum"!
2. Dali, 250 miles west of Kunming. The Bai people are the main inhabitants here with their colorful culture, history as well as their most traditional housing! Cang Shan and Er Hai Lake, as well as the Three Pagodas are the signatures of Dali! The Ancient Town of Dali was first established in 1382 AD. Surrounded by a moat, this old town has a typical layout like a chessboard, old-time roofed buildings with dark blue tiles and the white and gray tall walls.
3. LIjiang: a nice three hours drive from Dali will take you to this UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The Ancient Town: also called Dayan Town will be your highlight! Take the chairlift to the top of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountains, where the view will be breathtaking!
