On this planet 2 billion people believe Jesus is their Savior. 4 billion people don't believe in him as their savior.
If truth is in numbers, and majority rules, you really need to find a better argument to gain respect.
That said, of course I respect your beliefs. As I hope you respect mine.

Classic fallacy: "A lot of people believe Jesus is God, and they can't all be wrong, can they?"
(Note: More people do *not* believe Jesus is God, so argumentum ad populum doesn't even apply!)
I don't bow before the majority when the majority is wrong. In the past, the majority thought such "enlightented" thoughts as "Women shouldn't vote!" and "Black people should work for free!" and I see no reason to respect those ideas.
Neither do I see any reason to respect a guy who tells his followers to hate their families and become eunuchs, among other things. He had some interesting ideas, but they weren't all good. (This is especially true since by "respect" you probably mean "pay reverence to.")

There were millions of people that thought slavery in America was ok. There are millions in the Middle East and Africa that think FGM is ok. There were large numbers that sacrificed your own Jesus. Strength in numbers is NOT an excuse for believing or even respecting something.

That doesn't make any sense at all. If you don't believe in something how are you even supposed to give it respect. Jesus was Jewish and his own people don't believe in him. The Romans killed him and now the are the biggest supporters of him. Your whole religion doesn't make sense and everybody knows that. Your only excuse is faith and I give you a lot of credit to believe such a story no proof and yet still have hope that it is true.

I just wanted to say that I can agree with what your saying. I am not Christian, but I respect the teachings of Jesus Christ and think he was an amazing man who had a lot of great things to say and do. However, I don't agree with your condemning people to Hell. (Not that my opinion in that regard will matter to you.) But I do agree that as a historical figure he should be respected for what he did and what he taught. It's too bad that we don't have a better idea today of what he actually meant by it all. Not only did the man speak in parables, but we have issues with interpretation. Everyone interprets everything differently. It's tough to be sure you've 'got it right'. But, maybe (just maybe) Jesus intended for us to glean our own meaning out of his teachings. :-)

I don't respect him any more or any less than any other person who has lived on this planet. The fact that people have killed and caused destruction in his name is what makes me respect the whole concept of religion less.
Jesus was a person, but people took it all too seriously.

More dogma, my friend. As illustrated in the responses your premise that atheist don't respect Jesus is ill conceived. Go directly to jail do not pass go do not collect $200 and skip three turns.

I think that Jesus is a mythical figure. Numbers alone do not count. I do respect most religious people, if they are respectful in return. It seems you do not personally qualify for that, though.

Why should I respect someone I think is fiction?
Why don't you respect Santa Clause? Why don't you respect the Tooth Fairy?
I don't have to respect Jesus. And respect is earned, not given to Christians freely just because they're Christian.
