Depends what you are looking for
It gets good gas mileage for its size (mid size sedan) but if your goal is an inexpensive car you need to look farther than gas mileage. You can buy a conventional gasoline sedan with a 4 cyl engine and still get 40+ mpg highway if you drive it properly...you won't get that mileage if you drive badly, but the hybrid's gas mileage will suffer even more from bad driving habits. You will also save a few thousand on the sticker price It will also feel like a normal car.
In the Prius the seats are cheap, the interior is very conservative (they needed to make the car as light as possible to get the best gas mileage) A normal car will have more supportive seats and more interior amenities.
Also if you have ANY desire to 'pimp out' your car do not get a Pruis...a big stereo will hinder your gas mileage even more, both by electricity use and wieght, and big heavy rims will kill your gas mileage.
If you can get past the odd looks, inside and out, the strange feel of the car, the odd shifting, and you are looking to 'be good' to the environtment then a Prius is a good pick. If you want a conventional car with a normal feel to it, and are just looking for good gas mileage, buy a 4 cylinder sedan and go easy on the gas pedal.

I own a Subaru Impreza with a 2.5 liter 4 cyl engine (thats on the larger size for a 4 cylinder) the car wieghs as much as a mid size car due to the AWD system, and it drives with all 4 wheels rather than 2 wheels, and I STILL manage to get 34-35 mpg highway. If I can do that with an AWD car on the heavier side for a car being pushed by a 4 cyl, I would imagine better mileage can be pulled out of a lighter car with a smaller 4 cylinder that only drives with the front wheels :)

It is a good car for me. I have a 15 - 20 minute commute in a major metropolitan city. There is a lot of traffic and lots of starts and stops. However, I get great mileage on the highway, usually around 47 mpg. The better I drive (no quick starts, don't speed up to a red light, go the speed limit, etc.), the better the gas mileage. Normal is between 46 and 51 mpg for me. It is a great commuter car, but can also be used on long trips. I did a 700 mile drive home for Christmas. It was no different than a regular sedan, except that I didn't use as much gas! Also, I evacuated out of Houston during Hurricane Rita; took me 7 hrs to get to Killeen and I only used one tank of gas!
If you are looking for an environmentally forward, commuter car (and you can afford it) then it's a great car for you. If you like a sportier car, get something else.
(I think the car is cute!)

The Prius is a very, very nice car. If it had a BMW sticker on it instead of a Toyota sticker, the same car would probably be going for $45,000.

Yes it gets great mileage but the car itself is very, very nice to drive.

I bought one in 2005 and liked it but decided to sell it and get a used Avalon to save money. I was able to get 50 miles per gallon if I drove it extremely carefully. I like the navigation system and entry system but I'm not sure it's worth the extra money. I made traffic jams and stoplights less annoying since I wasn't burning any gas. haha

I've ridden in a few and a couple of friends have them. They like their car and I like riding in them. When they come out with a convertible I'll buy one.

It's good for gas mileage. I think they are ugly, but it'll get you where you need to go and save money on gas.
