ask him what kind of movies he enjoys, and whatz his fav movie,,,it will get him started into talking about movies, and you will know if he likes to go to the movies...

There's really no 'for sure' way to get him to say yes. The best i think is ask earlier so at least he doesn't have plans yet, maybe. Pick a good movie to watch, something that's newly released so you're sure he hasn't seen it and of course, your good company.

Seriously - don't worry about being sure - just ask. The worst that can happen is that he'll say no, and then you're in the same situation you're in now. But the upside is that maybe he'll say yes, and you'll get to go on a date.
Just remember, though - if you ask - you're buying.
