Better?? They are both of equal quality. The only real difference is the type of yeast used in the process. Forget the mass produced budmillcoorweiserdraft. Harp is a great lager and so is Yeungling,
Bass, Sam Adams, longtrail all have great ales. The nice thing is they can both be made light and drinkable or more fullbodied and robust. Ther are plenty of "Summer Ales' out there that compare with the lagers. Sam Adams Black lager is on par with a lot of dark ales.
It's not a question of better. The question is which one will you have tonight?

It's very difficult to say which is "better," since they are very different beers, generally. I'd contend that, "which is your favorite" might be a more appropriate question. Ales tend to be more complex in flavor profile and vary greatly between styles ... they challenge the palate more than the typical lager. They're often higher in ABV (alcohol by volume) too. Lagers are brewed to be an "easy drinker" without challenging the palate with aggressive hop or malt flavors. As a rule, they're lighter in mouthfeel and have a very balanced malt/hop profile. There are exceptions to every rule and some lagers are quite flavorful (not the ones you can buy at the gas station, though).
Again, they are just very different ... better or worse only depending on what you like in a beer.

It depends on the time of year. I generally go with light lagers in the summer and darker lagers or ales in the fall. Unless it comes down to a choice between a local brewer vs a nationally distributed mass produced beer. I pick the local brewer because the beer is usually fresher and I like to support local business.

One is not better than the other, but in the heat of the summer a lager is nice and refreshing. Ales tend to have a more complex flavor and they are very tasty when its cooler out.

If you want a beer that has some taste then go with an ale. If you want something easy to drink then go with a lager.

the real questions is which is better can bottle or glass
cans are safer
a bottle is good
but if you want the best flavor from a beer then you should pour it into a glass.
I like ale better lager is too heavy on my stomach
