It's my favourite movie (s), and in my opinion, the best to ever be made.
The message: even the smallest being has the power to change the course of a desperate future. There's always hope. Friendship and love are stronger than orcs, Uruk-Hais, giant spiders, and Ring-obsessed ex-hobbits. And evil dark Lords, and eyes in towers, and Rings of Power.
Or so I believe the message is.

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote LOR during or directly after WWII. The message, I suppose, would be that, even in the face of overwhelming odds a brave few can stand against tyranny, as England did against the might of the German juggernaut.
The King of Rohan said, at the Battle of Helms Deep:
"What can men do against such [rampant] hate?"
To which Strider replied:
"Ride out with me. We shall ride out and meet them."
It's about the power of a few just fighters against the might of an immense yet unjust army.
It is reflected whenever a larger attacking army invades a country and the common-people are forced to take up arms in their defense.
Another point:
The most powerful of all the characters is:
Samwise Gamgee. He is the only person in the entire world who could hold the One Ring and return it of his own free will. So, another point is that, like in life, heroes are ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

As usual that in every High Fantasy novel.... "Good always tirumph in the end".
the statement above saying the Samwaise Gamgee is the most powerful character because he is the "only" one to being able to give up the ring is wrong... Bilbo is also one of those person. And maybe during the first one where Frodo willingly give it to Galadriel.

That the smallest and most underestimated of beings, in this case a hobbit, can achieve great and important of things.
I don't know, watch the film, read the book - draw your own conclusions.

Don't let Schmegal get his hands on your ring, once he has got his finger in, you will have a hard job getting it back out.
