If you are REALLY into using "rat shot" from a 22 rifle, check into buying a new Remington 572 semi auto 22 with a smoothbore barrel.

All of the shot cartridges have the shot encapsulated in a plastic shell shaped vehicle aka bullet. The plastic just blams apart when it exits the barrel; I use 44 snake shot in a 44 special bulldog when I am running a mower adjacent to a highway so there is no danger to traffic; and if I get a rattlesnake in my lap I don't have to try drowning it in coffee or something. In a side note there is 7.62x39 indoor practice ammo that has a 60grain; or thereabouts; plastic bullet. It was produced in E German and I bought a couple of cases of it years ago. It also is death on gophers and safe for the neighbors as it won't travel very far. I have shot a lot of this in an SKS & an AK; have never seen any barrel problems. Probably a good idea to brush the bore with solvent after shooting any number of plastic shot shells to remove any buildup of plastic.

IF by rat shot you mean that shot CCI makes for .22's, yes it will ruin the rifleing in your barrel, and it wont be accurate with reg .22 longs. Just use regular .22 bullets unless you want to buy a new barrel.

Rat shot is not intended to be used frequently in any rifle. It will not hurt your .22 if use it VERY sparingly.

CCI claims that it will only dirty up the barrel, but not cause any permanent damage. I believe them, but I still wouldn't shoot it out of a .22 I really cared about. Buy a used piece of crap to shoot the shotshells.

Never heard of rat shot, but if you are going to be shooting rats, why not shell out the 10 dollars for a 500 ct. box of regular .22 long? That way you dont have to worry about any potential damage.

Nope, it won't, unless you shoot several hundred rounds of it, then you'll need to scrub the plastic out.
