Ok, so I babysat a little kitty for a few days and now my couch has fleas. What is the best way to get rid of them? Should I shampoo the carpets too?

Yes, treat the carpets too. Those provide a perfect medium for hiding eggs. Make sure to move the furniture in case a few have hidden.

What you want is borax. Sprinkle that on your carpet and couch and let it sit about 20 minutes, then vacuum it up. And keep vacuuming every day for about 2 weeks (the life-cycle of a flea) to make sure you get all the fleas and their eggs. If you have curtains that touch the ground, you'll want to wash them too.

Meanwhile, the kitty's owner should treat the cat and the cat's home similarly so there won't be any recurrences. It sounds to me like the cat's home environment is crawling with fleas too.

Good luck!

Shampoo will only kill the live fleas, not the eggs that are nested in the area. Clear the room out and bomb the area with a flea product. Only way to make sure you got all of the fleas and the egg larva.

Shampoo them both! YOu might consider pre-treating them both with a flea killing spray of some sort, and then shampooing them.

Go to your vet and get some Frontline Flea Spray; you'll probably need the large bottle. $50.00, but it will do the trick.
