Okay-wedding is Sept 29 this year.
Both wedding & reception are being held "outdoors" @ my parents farm.
WE are doing all food ourselves & not having a caterer.
Since we're not catering & will not have 'servers', we're setting it up "Family Buffet" style. My fiance & I want to go for good "comfort/downhome cooking" foods, but we have to keep the preparation manageable.
We've come up with:
Main Items: Ham, Roasted Turkey Breast
Hot Sides: Old Fashion Green Beans w/bacon & onion
Sweet Potatoes (Family favorite)
Cheesy Potatoes (Family favorite)
* Not scalloped,
uses hashbrowns, red/grn pepper, onion,
sour cream & cheese-YUM!
Cold Sides: Macaroni Salad (His mom makes the BEST!)
Tossed Salad w/FRESH greens
Dinner rolls

We want to keep the same "downhome" theme to the deserts so we're doing "Grandmas homemade" style cookie trays w/
Choco chip, Peanut Butter, Sugar and oatmeal raisin along w/ 4 flavors of cupcakes.
My mother is also going to make warm sliced cinnamon apple rings (made with her own apples from thier orchard) to offer on the buffet as well.
So....what do you guys think? HUNGRY?? :-)

to answer some of the questions so far...yes we are having cake, the cookies and cupcakes are part of the dessert, and we are planning fruit salad as well (I just forgot to mention it-woops!) As far as trying to make it more "health concious"---well then it wouldn't be "comfort food" would it? LOL...trust me I usually eat alot lighter myself, but for THAT day I'm enjoying myself! THANKS TO ALL FOR ALL THE GREAT COMMENTS! KEEP THEM COMING!

We are only having approx 100 people, so we really don't want to have to "add" too many dishes. We contemplated the need for "vegetarian" style items, but pretty much ALL of us are from "farm country", so we're all a bunch of meat and potato kinda folk.

Our guests will not have to carve their own ham/turkey. We are going to pre-slice them and keep warm in 2 roasters on the buffet....we've done that for other events and it stays warm/moist and is easy for guests to plate themselves.

The menu is fine as is. It's a family affair so it is great that you are keeping just like that. My suggestion since YOU are doing all the cooking...alot of that sounds as if it will freeze well. If you or Mom have a deep freezer, I'd start making my trays up in advance Make it up, put in one of the large alum trays with a cover (add a layer of alum foil inside cover to avoid freezer burn ) and start loading up your deep freezer.
Then when time for wedding just pull out pre made trays- defrost/ heat and serve. Some of the more delicate items- things that don't take a whole lot of time to cook, you may want to cook 3/4 way done, then when you are reheating you can finish the cooking process and will taste fresher.
As the bride and brides family you don't want to spend those last couple of weeks burning midnight oil up cooking. Figure out how many of each item you will need- divide it up between you and Mom and whatever other family member wants to help (don't be too shy to ask FAMILY for a hand!)
and get those pans ready .
You can also shop for one menu item at a time this way!
Above all else- relax and enjoy your day. It's supposed to be a celebration for and to you..not mad crazy work!

this is such a great idea! I think if you actually had it catered on a farm, the food would be out of place. What a better way to spend your day than by enjoying all the comforts of home... :) I wish I would have done that! The cheesy potatoes sound GREAT!! I think people will really enjoy the food also.
And if there's anyone there who doesn't like fat content in some of the foods, well then they just won't eat those foods. Remember you can't please everyone!!
Enjoy, have a great day and Good luck!!

I think it's great. This is what weddings used to be. Either the couple married at the parent's home or in the one church the town had and there was a picnic lunch outside the church or buffet style at one of the family homes and guests usually brought a dish and it was pot luck. Since you all are farm folk this is the perfect solution. I'm even going simpler than that and having a cookout with burgers for my reception since its small and only family and close friends. Congrats.

Wow!! Sounds great to me! I'd be stoked to have a menu like this at a farm wedding. The food in going to complete the comfortable family-like atmosphere! By 'family buffet' do you mean they'll pass the food around the table or like a regular buffet where you go up and get the food? I think passing it around the table would be so fun, it would get people chatting.
Have fun and good luck!

I think the menu is very good for a ranch family dining meal.
I would like to point out that it lacks on fruits and vegetables and perhaps, it has too much starch. Since you are having two choices of potatoes, why not replacing the macarroni an cheese with cole slaw or fresh fruit so you can have variety away from tstarches and desert, Just a thought.
Good luck

Sounds yummy! great comfort food. The idea of having the meat sliced and presented on the buffet trays adds a nice little formality for a wedding. I would suggest maybe--- apple pie ala mode. Make the colour of the ice cream the color motiff of your wedding and sprinkle little candy confettis on it.

I don't think you should change things to cater to the tastes of others. If there is something there they don't want to eat or can't eat, then it's up to them to just not put it on their plate.
Menu sounds GREAT to me.
I'm usually not a fan of going to weddings, but yours sounds more like a family get together then some stuffy "show" everyone feels they have to put on. Sounds like a fun time. I hope everything goes well for you. ENJOY YOUR DAY!

With the ham and turkey breast, I assume people will need to carve their own. If this is the case, I think meats that do not need carving for the guests would be better, such as cut up whole chickens.

Actually that sounds excellent, but I would suggest adding a vegetarian option, as you may find that some people will ask, even if it's just because they don't want ham or turkey and aren't generally vegetarian. Hope that helps.
