You need blood pressure machine first or a manual one. With the manual...you pump it up to about 180 and slowly let it deflate...the first heart beat you hear is the systolic(top number) the last one you hear is the diastolic(bottom number). That's your BP! The first is when your heart is at work and the last is when it should be at rest....hope this helps..

If you are doing it yourself pump it up to about 150 or until you can not feel your heart beating in your arm. It should start releasing pressure automatically. when it stops it will give you a reading. 120/80 is pretty close to ideal for most. You should sit and rest for 5 or more minutes before taking it to get a more accurate reading. Either arm will do, in my case I have little pressure in my left arm compared to my right. Mine can go as high as 199/100 and has went as low as 60/11 at rest in the hospital. At 116/68 my left side of my body quits working correctly. Since then I have had a stroke and had the problem surgically reversed, I was lucky, brain surgery fixed me, that isn't normally the case though. 1 in 3 aren't as lucky. I can tell you what my blood pressure is by the way I feel. When it's high my heart beats in my ear/ears, when it's low my vision dims and I feel weak in the knees, and I feel faint/dizzy, but I am out of a wheel chair now, and I can walk short distances. You can read the pressure in your ankles too to determine if you may have Peripheral Artery Disease, if there is a big difference between your legs and your arms!
