I have an iMac running 10.3.9, with an 80gb drive and 17gb space remaining. My wife has an AOL account. We have a cable modem connection. The AOL software is AOL 10.3.7.

She says she keeps 1) getting bounced off & 2) in mid-session, while answering an e-mail or whatever, the AOL version of the spinning beach ball (a grey one) turns up and spins and spins. Essentially, the program constantly freezes. And she says some artwork either never loads or half-loads. She often gets a message saying: "Your AOL session has ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." She has never had a problem-free session and rages at our Mac (understandably). At her job, on her PC, she never has these problems. I do not use AOL myself, and know nothing.

Is this normal?
Is there anything I can do to change this?
Are there any setting I can tweak?
It has been a problem since we initially got the Mac, even though I have upgraded the AOL software as needed.

AOL is terrible software. Your wife is lucky not to have the same problems with AOL the PC, as many people I know have. AOL doesn't write good software, don't blame the Mac. Here's a few suggestions. Make sure you're running the most up-to-date version of the AOL client. If you are, download a fresh copy, uninstall your old one and install the newly downloaded version. If you still have problems, try looking for a third party application to connect to AOL. There may be a few. If that doesn't work out, ditch the AOL. It's the 21st century and there are many alternatives that much, much better than AOL. Just get a broadband connection that doesn't require you to run an application to connect to the internet. Also, think about upgrading to Mac OS X Tiger if you can. That would be version 10.4. Better yet, wait until October for Leopard. If your Mac has a Firewire port, you should be able to run Tiger or Leopard. Don't ask me why, but that seems to be the system requirement. Older G3 systems without Firewire ports don't support Tiger or Leopard. But really, it's not your Mac's fault that AOL writes buggy software. It's a common problem with AOL software. It's garbage.

Rawlyn: No. My Mac can run circles around your PC. I guarantee it.

Unfortunately, AOL has not updated its s/w for the Mac in a long long time. But I heard they are working on a new version for the end of the year that is built just for Mac. Until then, I recommend your wife use thunderbird to check her AOL email or the web version of AOL. She can also use iChat to IM with an AOL screen name. Hope this helps.

There seems to be a problem with AOL software and Mac. AOL has a tendency to not fully support Mac for whatever reason. You should be able to contact AOL Customer Services reguarding that issue and they should be able to provide an update for you for that set of problems.

Oh my. Good heavens. Macs are wonderful, but AOL is not. While this may not be the answer you are hoping for, I suggest getting rid of AOL immediately.
