The actual hanging medallions are called medals...the small rectangular ribbons which match the color/pattern of the ribbon the medal is suspended from is called a service ribbon. You also recieve a small metal version of the ribbon when you are presented with a medal. A slang term for the rectangular ribbon array is 'fruit salad' btw.

All the ribbons a person receives go on a ribbon bar (the one worn over the breast pocket), that are worn on Class A's (dress uniforms). If the person were wearing Dress Blues they would wear either the ribbon bar or actual medals (which are the same as the ribbons and are very small) just above the pocket too. As you read in the other answers the only medal actually worn around the neck is the Medal of Honor.

Hope this helped!

that would be called normal, as all medals and ribbons are worn above the left breast pocket, except for the medal of honor. It is the only award that has an actual ribbon to be worn around your neck.

in the military we call the medals and ribbons on our uniform a rack, but I am not sure what you are getting at. I never saw a ribbon on a neck. Maybe a medal around the neck?

only ONE medal is worn around the Neck, the Medal Of Honor. all other ribbons are worn on the uniform, above the pocket.

ETA: it's called a ribbon bar, a salad bar, a rack, fruit salad, just depends on who you talk to.

I'm only aware of one US medal that is worn around the neck, and that is the Congressional Medal of Honor.
