www.cat.org.uk have been showing how to practically live lightly, not just carbon footprint. and you can invest in the co-operative. Worth a visit anyway.

they may give you some ideas for setting up your own local community windfarm, or bio-diesel, or sustainable building or hydro or tidal scheme.
Meeting local need is a great way to invest and reduce environmental and carbon footprint; while supporting local community and economy.

Eco-vilages are another good way to learn & investment opportunity http://gen.ecovillage.org/; some like Findhorn have links to offset schemes like Trees for Life.

Why do people get so much abuse if they want to invest in sustainable, less polluting businesses, rather than the orthodox super-rich petro-chemical industy or arms, drugs (inc alcohol & tobacco)...?
doesn't it make economic sense for a long term investment to buy into something that can still deliver in 10-20 years?

I wouldnt pay so you can be green, carbon offsetting is a big con and you would have to be green to fall for it in my opinion. It works like this - more planes in the sky, more terminals just so longs the company plants a few trees here and there and makes bags of extra cash from the extra money people are paying.

This research is funded by massive companies like airlines already so paying for that wouldnt really benefit you in anyway. To be green recycling is a fantastic thing to do and this alone will massive help the environment. This would be more benefitial than throwing away your hard earned cash.

You are welcome to invest in such projects, that is how the rich get richer and if it makes you feel good do it. There are however no ways of"offsetting" your carbon emissions.
All you can do is lower your personal energy usage and buy fewer consumer goods. The amount of emissions involved in making the steel to build your car is enormous. Every time you spend money you use energy. Live simply and donate the rest of your cash to charity, not to Al Gore and his super rich cronies.

i understand where your coming from but you are assuming the warming effect is due to man.the fact is that co2 is a very minute percentage of gasses in the atmosphere.nature alone is creating the warming due to sunspots etc,its too big a subject to go into here.nature creates and nature will destroy.
