I have heard rumours that australia is in such a severe drought that within 4 years they will have to leave, is this true and if it is how the hell did that happen without someone doing something about it?

It won't have to be evacuated. But life will be hard for some people and some people may choose to move, probably to some other place in Australia.

Global warming is one cause, and that will get worse. Here's a great book about global warming by an honored Australian scientist. "The Weather Makers". He devotes a chapter to talking about future water shortages, mostly using Australia as an example. Should be available in most bookstores.

I don't think it's possible to evacuate an entire continent, it's hard enough to do it with a city. Also, I don't think that the drought is that drastic. Australia has expierienced droughts before, more than half of it is desert. Plus, drought have to end sometime, I don't think there has ever been a four year drought.

Some stories have a wee bit of truth hidden somewhere in the background. I think that if global warming continues and the jury's still debating that, but if the temperatures continue to rise, then there will be large areas, especially around the equator, that may become uninhabitable due to extremely high temperatures. As for Australia, maybe we can finally have a winning streak playing them at cricket? Games to be held somewhere in Greenland?

You are kidding right? Australia has a land mass equivalent to the continental US and a population of over 20 million. In the most severe drought the rainfall deficit is about 250mm a year. If the deficit looks like being long term; as in permanent climate change; we need only clear or thin a small percentage of our dense forests, regrowth or plantations to adjust. We are in a temporary bind in a few populated areas because of the influence of the "No More Dams" brigade over the past few decades. The problem is entirely green politics. More proof that the environmentalists are the last people you want running the environment.

The Royal Navy are going to tow an iceberg from Canada down to Australia to help out with the drought threat.

is that what they are telling people overseas?? OUTRAGEOUS!! no way would a whole country be evacuated - i mean where would we all go!

there has acutally been some relief today with storms and heavy rain and it looks to continue over the next week. it wont be enough to break the drought but its giving farmers something to smile about.

And what do you suggest someone does about it? Unfortunately human beings cannot yet control the weather. I cannot imagine that Australia will have to be evacuated - drought is not that unusual and no doubt it will rain when its ready.

OH u can control the rain???? Australia has had this problem from the beginning as there are almost no mountains to push up the moist air to condense it . But Mother nature has always taken care of it before.

i have friends in Australia and they've not mentioned a thing. Most of the country is made up of desert, so its not surprising if they do have droughts.

the story about the entire population of AU having to be evacuated is a myth ..... I did however hear one report that Sydney will run out of drinking water in 4 yrs ...

HOWEVER .... http://au.news.yahoo.com/070422/2/137ai.html

Hopefully they wil be able to store the water from this rain ..( every little bit helps)
