Short answer to Q1 - Yes. when a public figure dies in public do we not all have a duty to pay attention to the circumstances? In fact, whether in public or in private an unnatural death demands public scrutiny. Had a 'government official' been able to prevent the showing of the distressing pictures and films our suspicions would have been rightly aroused and the British public would have created a storm.
Harold Shipman killed hundreds because there was no adequate public scrutiny - the officials appointed and charged, by us, to investigate untimely deaths simply did not do their job - if there had been any publicity they would have had to adequately perform their duties!
As to the effect on the princes - I can't believe that they have not been exposed to this material. If it had been my mum I'd have wanted to see every inch of film. Experiencing grief is an inevitable part of growing up. Every day in the UK some kid loses his mum in tragic circumstances - too often by murder. Nobody can protect that kid from the effects of an investigation and trial - it has to be done. Our princes are made of the same stuff as an orphaned kid on a sink estate - why should we imagine them to be weaker and more delicate?

If you or I died in tragic circumstances like a road crash there would be a post mortem.
Princess Diana died 10 years ago her body (remains) was put into a lead lined casket and placed in a vault at her ancestral home. No post mortem.
It is about time that closure was made so that she can at last rest in peace.
Had they done this 10 years ago the princes would not have to go through the trauma of having it dragged up again and again.

I think it's awful that the media is showing the last hours of Lady Di's life, I feel for her sons. I don't think Channel 4 should go ahead with this.

She has been dead for 10 years. I think it is time to finally let her rest in peace. You would think that the media would learn from their past mistakes and let them live their lives without shoving a camera in their face everywhere they go. Those poor kids can't even go to the bathroom with out it making the news. Journalists have no morals or ethics. They KILLED their mom and now they want to destroy their lives too. I think this is the main reason that Prince William and his fiance broke up.

the fact is though legally the media are completely within their rights to show the pictures. i don't think people are so bothered about pictures of car crashes with regular people are they. theres no mass moral outrage when the news channels show footage of people killed in Iraq . i don't particularly want to see any pictures of people dead/dying royal or not but people probably want to. come on tell me when driving past a car crash you've never had a peek ? same thing except those people aren't royals.

She was a public figure. The family should understand that. Besides, they have EVERY right, and capability, to NOT watch it. I wouldn't.
She chose to be public in her affairs, she was the "uber"celebrity.
The boys don't have to watch the show, but they don't have the right to tell anyone else not to.

Its toooo cruel ! However, what were they actually attempting to establish, so many theories, will we ever really know the truth?

However, its really does reflect on how powerful the MEDIA is.

It isn't necessary to show images like this, occasionally there may be justification for showing disturbing images but this isn't one of them.
