Yes, it is Markandeya who was destined to live only 16 years leading a virtuous life. His parents were once blessed by Shiva and were asked to seek a boon from the Lord. Shiva told them he would bless them with a son who is virtuous but lives only up to 16 years of age. Otherwise they can get a son with longevity but who will be arrogant and lack in virtue. The parents preferred a virtuous child. Thus Markandeya was born. He was not informed about the boon. But on the last day when he turned 16, his parents were veiling and crying. Asked about the reason, he was told the truth. Immediately after a bath he went to the temple of Shiva and encircled the Linga with his hands. When Yama approached at the appointed hour he cast his noose around Markandeya which encircled the Linga. Immediately Shiva manifested and cursed Yama. He granted Markandeya the boon of longevity.

Shiva is one of the gods in the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. In this triad, Brahma is the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer. Shiva must originally have been a tribal god during the time of the Indus Valley Civilization, well before the concepts of Brahma or Vishnu even came into existence. He is believed to be boundless and eternal. Also known by the name Maheshwar, Shiva is represented as residing in the funeral ground, smeared all over with ashes, and wearing snakes for ornaments. He also wears tiger hide and sits on tree bark, usually in meditation. In the face of injustice and evil, a third eye on his forehead opens and the evil burns out to ashes in the fiery blaze. He is said to have reduced even gods like Kamadeva to ashes. Shiva is said to reside in the Kailash range in the Himalayas. Parvati is his consort, and Lord Ganesh and Subramanya his sons. He also has another son, Lord Ayyappa, by Mohini (Lord Vishnu in woman form). Shiva probably has more worshippers than any other Hindu god. He is usually worshipped in the Shivlinga form, the phallic emblem of supreme creative energy. The Nataraja, or Shiva in the cosmic dance, is also very common. Shiva is also known by the names Mrityunjay, Shankar, Mahadev, Rudra, Neelkanth, Mallikarjun, Nandikeshwar, Gaurishankar, Gangadhar, among many others.

MARKANDEYA
Mrikandu Munivar worshipped Shiva and sought from him the boon of begetting a son. As a result he was given the choice of either a gifted son, but with a short life on earth or a child of low intelligence but with a long life. Mrikandu Munivar chose the former, and was blessed with Markandeya, an exemplary son, destined to die at the age of 16.
Markandeya, son of sage Mrikandu was predicted to live for only 16 years. As advised by his father, Markandeya worshipped Amritaghateswarar (Lord Shiva) in Tirukkadaiyur, bringing the water from Ganges through an underground passage to the temple. On the destined day, Yama appeared with his noose, kala paasa . Markandeya sought refuge in the Lord and embraced the Siva Lingam. The Lord warned Yama not to touch Markandeya as he was under his protection. Yama did not listen and threw the noose that bound Markandeya and the Lingam together. Angered by this act of rashness, the Lord kicked him with the left leg and held him under his left foot, making him inactive. Markandeya was blessed with Ever sixteen . Lord Shiva at the temple of Tirukadaiyur is called Kalasamharamurthy (Meaning Samhara of Kalan-Yama) and Yama got his power back which is another incident...

~~OM~~
Mrikand Muni, Markandeya’s father performed tremendous austerities to get a son from Shiva. After some time Lord Shiva appeared to him and asked him what boon he wanted. Mrikand Muni told Shiva that he wanted a son. Shiva said to him, “You can have a foolish son with a long life or you can have a very intelligent son; but he will die at an early age.” Mrikand Muni said, “I’ll take the intelligent son.” Markandeya was born as the son to Mrikand Muni and Mrikand Muni was very happy.
Markandeya grew up as a lover of Shiva. His father gave him a lot of knowledge and taught him how to do tapasya. When his son reached 16 years of age, Mrikand Muni became despondent because he knew that his son would die early. He decided that he would not live in the world without his son and he tried to take his own life. Just then Narad Muni appeared and asked Mrikand Muni why he was trying take his own life. Mrikand Muni explained that he was very sad that his son would die soon. When Markandeya overheard this, he said to his father, “This body is nothing but the five elements and it is not eternal. Why are you sad even though you have so much knowledge? Mrikand Muni replied, “I am sad because I will not be able to see you any more.”
Hearing this conversation Narad Muni advised Markandeya, “You perform austerities for Shiva and Shiva will give you blessings. Shiva brought you here and Shiva will take you from here.”
So Markandeya went off to do tapasya. He began to worship Shiva everyday, 24 hours a day. He recited the Mahamritunjaya Mantra, the Mantra which gives victory over death. At the appointed time for Markandeya to die, Yama, the God of Death, came to take Markandeya, but Markandeya was completely absorbed in samadhi.
Then Shiva appeared and said to the God of Death,“You cannot take him because he is praying to me with pure devotion. He is totally surrendered in worship. Whoever attains that quality of attention is freed from death."
Yama replied, “But it is my duty to take him. What shall I do? Shiva said, “No. You cannot take him. He will come with me.”
At this time the Divine Mother appeared. She said to Yama, “You cannot take him. He has other karma to perform. I will give him a boon.” She told Markandeya, “You will write about me and share that knowledge with all of humanity so they will understand how they can be united with me. When they will know me, they will try be with me all of the time.”
So Markandeya was saved and he went off to do tapasya and realized the Divine Mother. After his realization he wrote the Chandi Path and Shiri Devi Madbhagvat Mahapurana.
This legend of Shiva killing death itself, is frozen in metal and held in worship at Tirukkadavur. Tirukkadavur is the shrine where thousands throng to celebrate shashti abda poorthi (60th birthdays), with the belief that the blessings of the deity enshrined would prolong their lives. Tirukkadavur is one of the 8 Veeratta temples celebrating Shiva as the destroyer of evil forces.
