The 'generic' name for dog is in fact dog. (Using 'generic' in a less-than-literal sense)
Not all canines are dogs (Wolf, canis lupus, is an example)
This of course depends on your use of 'generic'. Since dogs are of the genus 'canis' then the generic name is 'canis.'

Dog or canine is the generic name. If you want the species and genus name it is canis familiaris.
