I'm just as confused as you are! Though Polygamy was abolished by the Mormon church shortly after Joseph Smith was martyred, we still get flack over it but there are many who cheat on their SINGLE wife and are never legally punished, nor looked upon as "immoral" in society's eyes any more!

You seem to forget that polygamy was a way of life from the 1850s to 1890s to well into the 20th century. It was condoned and expounded on as the ONLY way to salvation. After Utah became US territory, the church was forced abide by US law. Read D&C 132 - it's still there, bucky.

The Christian religious meaning of marriage is about two souls joining together - representing the duality of Feminine and masculine together in a divine union. Three doesnt fit that religious meaning. From a legal framework, marriage has a specific meaning and is defined as a type of arrangment which is designed to support a family. A mother and father of a child have the best chance of being the best parents. An extra marital lover is not the same as another wife from those two perspectives.

Theoretically, adultery is still illegal in most states and jurisdictions. The act is hardly ever pursued by the judicial system, however. Polygamy is also illegal. As far as lawmakers go, the difference lies in how deeply either disturbs the social order. While infidelity may be a bad thing, it can usually be swept under the rug while society goes on its merry way. Polygamy is more disturbing to most of us because it represents a more open and blatant challenge to the way we think things ought to be.
