It not only varies by State- but by county and even city in some areas, the best thing to do would be to check the home page of the city or county where you are planning to visit.

When I first went to NY city from maryland, I was shocked that you COULD buy liquor in the drug store. In my specific county in Maryland ( Montgomery) you can buy beer and wine in delis and carry out stores, and a couple of grocery stores ( too complicated to figure out why one can and 30 others can't) but liquor can only be purchased from County owned and operated liquor stores. In other maryland Counties, you can buy all types of alcohol in carry outs. In neighboring west virginia, you can buy beer and wine in Walmart, and liquor in 7-11. so just check before hand if you really need to know!

That's not true. I live in NY and I buy alcohol in the grocery store. It may be just your particular county. Though they don't offer hard liquor, they do sell beer and wine. My brother in law lives in Maryland, he has to go to a liquor store to purchase beer, there it is not offered for sale in the grocery store.
