Okay, obviously atheists can't kill something they don't think is real. But I'm talking about them killing the notion of God

When belief in a god dies, the god dies.

Historically the charge of deicide has been limited to the Jews vis-a-vis Jesus of Nazareth.

Some atheist philosophers proudly claimed to have killed God, by which they meant 'demonstrated the incoherence of God as a possibility'. Nietzsche was famous for declaring 'the death of God', although he didn't take credit for the deed.

Most atheists are not philosophers, so I would say they are not guilty of deicide - at best copy-cat plagiarism.

This is the problem that I have with Christianity, how can a person kill a G-d? If G-d can be killed, then he is a human and not a G-d. Furthermore, atheists have not killed G-d, but religious zealots killed the beauty of G-d. Think about how many wars existed throughout the history in the name of G-d or in the name of Allah.
Now, let me also through in this G-d killed G-d. According to Christianity G-d sacrificed his own bigoted son to wash of people's sins. By not doing anything to help "his" own "son" he is both guilty of murder and accomplice to a conspiracy to create murder, since G-d know the past, the present and the future. Furthermore, one can argue that by using Christian texts that he is also guilty of rape. Why? He did not marry Mary after he slept with her nor asked her for permission.
Well, in any case this is my 10 cents on the opinion who killed the idea of G-d.

No.

I am afraid to say that Mr. Harlan Ellison is incorrect.

God has always existed, exists now, and will always exist.

Glory to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and will be forever.
Amen.

With love in Christ.
