Since I was a very small child I noticed when the TV came on I would hear a high pitch ringing in my ears. I could be in another room and hear when the TV was turned on and turned back off again and sometimes I would hear it from outside the house if I were close enough. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this or am I just weird?

I've already read some awsome answers I had no idea so many people had this. I too also hear electricity and transformers and I have had my ears checked everything is normal. The wax in my ears doesn't build up it is thin and comes out on it's own. I am just amazed at the answers I am getting.

No, your not weird. You just have extra high noise hearing. If you get a hearing test I would bet you can probably hear in a range that normal ears cannot.I have had this problem all my life. Now aged 71 years, I can still hear mostly high pitched noise from TV, radio, Touch Lamps, transformers etc. Anything that emits a high pitched noise.Fortunately I can usually "turn off", and not listen too hard. Sometimes though the reason you state, can be due to ear wax resonating on the ear-drum. Have you had your ears checked?

Think some of your previous listening habits might have damaged your hearing, As you say left ear seems to be impaired , The humming/whistling is a sign of tinnitus, which you can get along with hearing loss... Suggest you have a hearing audiology test, Doctor can arrange this at local hospital, Boots and other places do hearing tests but will charge, The results will tell you what can be done, Possibly nothing other than a hearing aid ...

Some electronic devices emit a very high pitched whine. This is especially true of older TVs. It probably means that you have good hearing in the higher frequency ranges. It's actually a good thing.

Yeah, that's a high frequency sound coming from your tv set. Some people won't hear it because their ears are shot. High frequency sound sensitivity goes out first. Women can hear higher frequencies than men on average also.

i had that problem too, but it was only with certain tv's

it was like that silent ringtone only me and my brother could hear it even if we were somewhere really far away from it....but my parents could be standing right in front of it and not notice a thing

so i think its just that really high pitched sound that only people under 20-30 can hear

like the thing with the ringtone if you haven't heard that

I have this too and have always had it.i also cant sleep too near outlets being used because i can hear the electricity. Some people are just more sensitive to these things.I have notived that the people i know that can also hear things like this tend to have lots of "deja-vu" dreams as well.We must just be more in touch with things!

Yes, I have had this happen to me. My tinnitis (ringing in the ears) is not so loud that it is a bother. I don't have it all day long---or at least I don't notice it. If yours gets real bothersome, I think there are medicines for it.

Ringing in the ears may mean low blood. go to the Doctor and have it checked.

It's not just you, I hear it too and so do other people. It's called radiation and radio frequencies my dear.

Kind of scary huh? The new TV technologies may do away with this hazard though..(DLP, LCD,PLASMA, etc)
