Get yourself a wedding planning book, perhaps at a used bookstore, and start saving right now. Secondly, get organized and stay that way. Keep copies of all contracts, quotes and other information in one place in an organized fashion, if you are planning the wedding yourself, designate someone to handle the logistics on your wedding day like and aunt. Start shopping now, the sooner you start the more choices you will have, which means better prices, especially if you are getting married during the busy season, i.e. May-October, and don't be afraid to say NO. Make sure you are getting exactly what you want it’s your's and your fiancée’s wedding so make it yours. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING. Don't rely on the vendors to do what they say they are going to do make sure it is in writing either on the contract or in an email and keep hard copies of everything. And have fun plan together and it will make the experience much more enriching.

How to plan a wedding, first spend a ridiculous amount of money on the ring, then an equally ridiculous amount on the Reception, Cars, Flowers and so on.

Then once married continue to spend money on a house, raising the kids, the dog, the cat, school excursions, medical bills etc.

Then after 15 or 20 years, come home one day and realise that your partner has become old and cranky as have you, at this point you also realise sex and any form of affection have become things of the past and it all ends in divorce where you find yourself right back at the beginning.

How to plan for a wedding, my advice "DON'T".

There are lots of wedding books out there that give you checklist and schedules. Also, I used http://www.theknot.com It's good because you can customize your own checklist and it helps you remember all the little details. I think the first thing to do is to pick the date and place. Then everything else will need to "match" that.

Set the budget. Pick a date. Pick a theme. Pick the colours.

After that, make a first draft of the guest list. That's a decent start.
