I think it depends on how much or how little they work. Working 5-7 days a week, like 12 hours a day, I think there's potential to make pretty good money.

I don't know the actual amount, but I had email correspondence with a man who worked 3 days a week as a taxi driver in New York and was a philosopher or some such thing for the remaining part of the week, teaching some thing to students etc. (not for money). So, it looks like they make good money.

I live in India

Not unless they were a livery driver who makes serious tips with high end clientel. The medallion cab (yellow taxi) drivers don't make very much and that is after working long hours usually 6 days a week. To own your own medallion in New York is the only way you can work for yourself as oppposed to a company but since the current price for a medallion is going for about $400,000 obviously most are owned by companies.

I don't know the numbers, but I know that nobody gets rich as a cabbie.

You have to buy a license, you have to pay for the license, for the medallion on your cab, and most importantly for gas.

Most people never get out of debt.

Probably, but their license isn't cheap either.
