or a short-lived Southern Pacific scheme of red, orange and gray, that I've never been able to find a picture of. Today, Union Pacific doesn't do bad.

Historically: New York Central lightning-stripe, http://www.iapdatacom.net/members/dlhloco/html61.html
or Ann Arbor (the real locomotives are preserved)

Amidst all the drabness and overall grime there HAVE been some nice looking paint schemes haven' there? Personally I like the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha streamliner paint schemes from the 1930's but there are several others that are quite attractive. The Milwaukee Road in 1976 had an SD-40 painted for the bi-centennial in red white and blue that was quite nice.

Well acutally the Union Pacific has made quite a few engine paint jobs over the past years. The last two years they have painted an engine the colors and way the engine looked before it got bought by the Union Pacific. They also made this one for George Bush the 41st President (not this president right now) I think that looks pretty cool. Under the sources is a picture of it. Hope it works! Forgot to tell you its painted like Airforce One.

In my opinion the classic Santa Fe red and silver "War Bonnet" paint scheme was the most impressive, especially when applied to the Alco PA-1 locomotives. But then again I grew up near Pittsburgh, so the B & O blue and grey scheme would be a close second.

I don't know how to add the "link" thingie, but go to "www.northeast.railfan.net". There you can see hundreds of different locomotive paint schemes.

Indeed, Rango, the Milwaukee's Hiawatha livery was quite stunning. I can't say I have a favorite as there are several fallen flag liveries I am privy to such as the Northern Pacific's North Coast Limited two-tone green scheme; the Baltimore & Ohio's blue, gray, and gold passenger livery; the Rock Island's blue and white scheme during its final years; the Santa Fe's famous Warbonnet; and yes, the Chessie's livery is a classic as well!

Also, for those interested and do not know, when you get a chance check out the Kansas City Southern's old Southern Belle passenger livery they are now applying to their new locomotives. It looks very nice!

I was always taken by the Red and Black and Orange " Black Widow " paint scheme of the Southern Pacific and the War Bonnets of the ATSF were wonderful as well. The MKT had some of the prettiest of the common steam engines, kept attractive and well maintained to the end. Running boards,
and drivers touched up in white this neat red and white herald on the tender and the yellow boxcar used as a baggage car.

personally, my favorites are Metro North's ex-New Haven FL9's, painted in the Cosmopolitan colors of red, silver, and blue, or the original McGinness colors of red, white, and black, with the large NH on the front and sides, or the ex-Illinois Central Gulf/Gulf Mobile & Ohio/MBTA rebuiIt F10 (originally F3's), also painted in Cosmopolitan red, silver, and blue. However, I also like the new paint scheme of the Genesis, which are slowly going through rebuilding at GE and repainting with a Cosmopolitan warbonnet-like red, silver, and blue. However, I also work here, so I am a bit more partial to my home railroad. However, as a second railroad, I kinda liked the old Wabash blue and white with the logo in the middle, with the flag, and the words "follow the flag" as the motto.
PS. If you would like to see the Cosmopolitan red, silver, and blue, on an F10, check out this YouTube video. http://youtube.com/watch?v=7Xd-YVFk0Aw
PSS. to see the McGinness red, white, and black on an FL9, check out this YouTube video.

I'm with Ding Bat on the C&O/Chessie System, but I have to give VERY high marks to both the SantaFe war bonnet, and the UP wings.

I have several (in no specific order):

1. BN's Cascade Green

2.GN's Empire builder scheme/BNSF's H1

3. NP's 2-tone green

4. MRL's lionshead logo scheme

5. UP's SP heritage unit

6. UP's DRGW heritage unit

7. BN SD60M #1991

8. BN's pacific pride units

I also like the daylight paint on SP 4-8-4 #4449. MILW's paint scheme was also pretty nice, I like it, but not as much as the ones listed above
