#1 is grind. Make sure the coffee you are using is ground for your machine. It makes a difference whether it is paper cone/flat filters/ and or metal filter. When you purchase your coffee at the starbucks they should ask what you want it ground on.
#2 water. Definitely use filtered water. Starbucks have their own water filtration systems w/in each store to acheive the best possible filtration they can.
#3 freshness - make sure that you are storing your coffee in airtight container. (not the freezer/refrigerator). Once you open the bag use it w/in 7 days to ensure the best freshness possible
#4 proportion - make sure that you are using a starbucks scoop (they are available for purchase in our stores for around $5.) and follow the standards on the bag of coffee.
These are just afew tips hope they help

RE:
Starbucks coffee VS home brew coffee?
I usually drink the mild house coffee at Starbucks and I like the taste and texture of their coffee. When I try to make it at home with my $150 grind and brew coffee maker......I can never achieve that same Texture and taste. The best I can do is achieve the same coffee texture as the local...

I have asked the same question for many years but the answers I got never revealed the truth. The commercial coffee (Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or McDonald's) is never the same as the coffee you brew at home or even the whole beans or ground beans you bought from them. Commercial coffee gives you the effect that you'll never achieve with home brewing. They put chemicals in their coffee so that we get desirable feelings. I feel better and look better after drinking their coffee. I tried every possible ways to get the same coffee, I even bought a coffee roaster and roasted my own coffee but the results are not the same. I think these coffee houses will never allow their secrets out like CoCa Cola will never share their ingredient secrets.

The reason you can't make the same coffee at home with your grind and brew is because your grind and brew probably uses only the amount of ground coffee that it needs to make a regular pot of coffee. If you want to make Starbucks tasting coffee, you need to use about 4 times as much coffee as you normally would. If you read the recommended amount to use, Starbucks says to use 2 tablespoons for every 1 cup of water. While traditionally, one tablespoon of fresh ground coffee is used for every 2 cups. If your grind and brew is making coffee like every place other than Starbucks, it is probably using the 1 TSP per 2 cups of water. Again, Starbucks is 2 TSP per one cup of water. 4 times normal coffee use. The mystery of why Starbucks sells so much coffee is now solved - They over-portion.

Use bottled spring water, not purified water. Purified or distilled water will leave you with flat tasting coffee. The water you use brings a lot of character to the coffee with all things being equal. Also, use the freshest beans available (if you have a local roaster you hit gold!).
2 things you might try for a dynamite cup: 1) French press, and 2) use a metal filter in your machine.
Both methods allow ALL of the flavor to be held in the water and not left in the paper filter.
Freshly roasted beans, good spring water and a French press will blow away anything Starbucks has to offer.

as to taste it may have to do with the amount of grounds used. Seems Starbucks suggests a lot more ground coffee per cup then a lot of other coffee companies.

Be sure your coffee maker is clean and doesn't have acid build-up. Try grinding you coffee different - either finer or coarser depending on what you are doing now. Use more coffee than the usual measurement. And use a good, filtered water.

Try using a French press. Much better coffee than what a coffeemaker gives you.
