I have been in your situation, and other then going to the dentist (which yes I know can be expensive, I had to wait a long, long time to get in) is to swish a mixture of warm water with salt in it and mouthwash repeatedly. The pain in my tooth got so bad, I had to go to the emergency room. There, they can't pull the tooth, but they may be able to give you some pain medication. They gave me some penicillin and acetinophen (sp? well it's just the big word for tylenol) with codeine, however, you may be allergic to codeine, because the rate of that is high. Therefore, they may give you a generic form of vicodin, and that should get rid of the pain. When eating, chew on the opposite side (as I'm sure you already know) and whatever you do, DON'T do the home remedy of using clove oil, it burns the tissues on the inside of your mouth, tastes horrible, and has no affect on the pain. I just recommend taking some aleve, icing the side of your face, and toughing it out, or you can do what I did, and go to the ER for some almost instant relief (after of course the two hour wait to get in to see a doctor lol) I wish you the best of luck, having been there! GL =)
ALSO---As one of the people above me noted, yes, a numbing tooth gel such as anbesol does help, TO AN EXTENT. You'll feel SOME relief, but not a great amount...The aching in the side of your face that feels like a jackhammer going into the tooth will fade to a duller roar lol

If it's possible and you can go to an emergency room, they'll give you a pain med as well as an antibiotic to fight infection in the cavity. If you have ibuprofen (such as Advil) or acetamenophen (such as Tylenol) they will help, especially the ibuprofen because it reduces inflamation. Take a little more than directed. You can have up to 800 mg of ibuprofen (four 200mg tabs). that's prescription strength. Stagger them - like, take 2 now and 2 more in an hour or so. If you only have Tylenol take three 500mg tabs, spaced 30 minutes apart.
DO NOT drink alcohol with them! It can cause kidney failure. However, if you have enough whiskey on hand, you could drink a lot of that INSTEAD. Also, you can gently brush the area with warm water and very little toothpaste, if you can stand to touch it. Rinse it with warm salt water. Put a warm towel on your face. And get medical help ASAP. Make a bill! I will say a prayer for you. BTW - prayer really does help.
If you have any clove oil or surface toothache pain medication, put one of them on too.

The best thing I've ever used is plain old salt water. Dissolve salt in a glass of warm water until no more will dissolve. Swish a mouthful, spit. Repeat until it's all gone. Works better than clove oil, for my money, and lasts longer. Getting really stinking drunk works well, too, but is more expensive and the hangover's a drag :)

Tylenol PM, and call the dentist in the morning. Maybe try anbesol or one of those oral anestheic gels you give to teething babies.
