You turn in AT LEAST a 2 week notice in writing. You do not tell them where you are going or how much you are going to make. And you definitely do not 'bad mouth' your current employer in the process.

Normally you have to give 2 weeks notice in writing. Some jobs might require a month.

The letter should say something like this.

Dear Boss,

Take this job and stuff it

Or more likely

This letter is to notify you that I intend to leave this job in 2 weeks time.

That is all you need.

You can often help your boss by making the letter nice and polite and giving a reason.

It is with regret that I will have to pay a bondage mistress to whip me as I will no longer be the subject of your cruel and sadistic barbs.

Or more politely.

My reason for leaving this job is because I have been offered another job in a another company. I can honesly say that I regret to leave this job, as I have many good colleagues and have learnt a lot in this position.

What you are doing is making you boss look good, because his boss will have to be told.

When you actually provide notice, go in and do it in person. Often expect to have a long chat about leaving. It is usually no problem. If you are leaving and your manager is mean to you, it looks very bad and everyone gets upset. So this usually doesn't happen.

A business letter informing your employer that your are leaving the company is appropriate and formal. Keep in mind that this employer will now be a reference - in one form or another. Always keep your letter brief and professional. In other words, if your are leaving because your boss has the intelligence of soap scum, no need to mention it. I would suggest something along the following:

"Dear Ms. Boss,

Kindly accept this letter as notice of my resignation. XYZ, Inc. has been a wonderful opportunity for me, but I have accepted another position that I hope will further expand my professional skills.

I am eager assist with a smooth transition and am happy to stay until Friday, (two weeks from date, or whatever).

Again, thank for the opportunities XYZ have provided and I wish you success in the future.

Sincerely,"

Anyway, something along these lines.

Hope this helps - Good luck!

Give your two week notice. I would recommend verbally telling your boss, and then at the same time providing a letter which formally states what you are intending with a copy going to HR as well. You should state something like, "Effective today, Friday June 8th, I am giving my two week notice of termination of my employment with XXX company, effective June 22nd. I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to work for the organization and have appreciated the opportunities afforded to me during this time to grow both personally and professionally." What you want to share outside of that is up to you. It is not the company's business why you are leaving and you should not feel obligated to share it. That being said, it is usually best to stick to "I found what I believe to be a better opportunity" rather than get into any details and risk burning any bridges.

You let them know you are taking your career in another direction & give them your 2 weeks notice - they really don't care, just as long as you give them 2 weeks notice & finish on a good note by serving the 2 weeks....

You can send a short message first and then your boss can prepare for it and accept it.
