- good knives (be sure to have a choice of serrated AND non-serrated) that are SHARP.
- cooking utensils - whisks, large spoons (with and without slats), spatulas, can opener, potato peeler, potato masher, large forks, potholders, etc.
- nice selection of seasonings (SALT AND PEPPER...garlic powder, lemon pepper, etc.) I prefer Kosher salt and freshly-ground pepper, myself.
- good-quality food (ingredients) to work with (keep garlic, onions and bell peppers on hand...you'll more than likely use at least one of those ingredients with any meal)
- CUTTING BOARDS
- plenty of different sized bowls and pots (skillet, dutch oven, sauce pan), baking pans
- BUTTER!!! ;)

******', not much. I'm so poor. I've got all my equipment, but in my fridge I've got a box of pizza, some ******' condiments, some booze, and that's close to it. any chef saying that they've got much more than that is a straight up liar.
