It was inmproved by processing it into what is called coke, This was done by controlled burning to remove much of the pollutants contained in raw coal and then the remains were compressed into the coke product which is a much cleaner burning product.

I'm not sure what you are asking but I'll take a shot.

I would think the biggest improvement to coal would come from creating coke.

By coking the coal it can be burned without all the emission problems associated with coal in it's original form.

Fossil of plants remnants underground ( basically carbohydrates) undergoned chemical changes by earth pressure and subsoil temperature for long time , to produce coal( composite of carbon in free/bound form, ashes, O2, H2, S etc ) , coal bed methane gas . Degree of conversion indicate quality of coal .
