This mostly depends on personal taste, but there are some rules to possibly help. Darker heavier beers fill you up quickly and are not that refreshing, so I would stay away from stouts and porters.
Lagers and Pilsners are usually lighter in color and not as heavy. You can make it even better by going with a beer that has a higher water content.

Blue Moon, Red Stripe and Heineken in the Keg Cans are pretty damn good on a hot summer day, especially for just chilling by the pool.
At a BBQ, or especially if I am grilling, I like a American Lager. I personally prefer MGD, Miller Lite, and Miller High Life for that, but I'm a Miller guy. PBR and High Life are great with a really big saucy BBQ like ribs or or pulled pork.
I also suggest unfiltered Belgium Whits, which are cloudy like a Heff but tend to be a little more fruity.

You might give Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy a try ... it's a light American Wheat Ale with natural lemon flavor added. Sort of a hybrid between a what beer and a lemonade. It's low in ABV (alcohol by volume) ... 4.2, if I recall correctly, and quite refreshing. Best of all, you can drink this beer quite cold and it doesn't adversely effect the flavor.
This beer isn't world class, but it is specifically designed for enjoying in the summertime!

The best beer would be the one I'm drinking at that point.
I'd go for a lighter colour beer, possibly a pilsner or pale ale.

A light beer.....Sol or Corona are good choices, a blond ale (Begium has some nice ones)....if all else fails just make sure the beer is ice cold and served in a frosty glass......yum

I am really into high quality beers but the best yard work on a hot day beer would have to be Straub.

I like bitter beers, but for most peaople something like an India Pale Ale is good. Most of these will have more fragrant hops which holds up better in the heat.

Miller lite for those that prefer Ameican yellow. I prefer Samuel Adams Summer Ale ice cold.... it has a hint of lemmon in it that is awsome on a hot summer afternoon.
