By churning milk and removing the whey and slowly concentrating the milk fat until you get a solid block. See wikipedia for more details.

When I taught first grade, we poured heavy cream into a jar, put on the lid, and passed it around. Each kid got to shake the jar for as long as he wanted, and then pass it on. Pretty soon -- butter!

Simply by churning ( stirring ) cream. You can make your own by putting cream in a bowl and using an electric mixer on low speed. It will take several minutes. You will probably want to add a little salt. When you are done there may be some whey in the bowl, just pour it off.
