I've live in both the U.S. and Europe. It startling how different the attitudes are re social responsiblities. The every man for himself mythos and mindset of the wild west is so strong in the U.S. that it undermines any significant sense of collective responsibility for the well-being of all members.

European societies, in contrast, have a continuous link with the millenia when it was absolutely necessary for the group to work together to survive. The intensity and immediacy of two immense wars within forty years has kept that alive.

The U.S. still has that I'm right and that's all that matters mentality. Sometimes its forms are more overt than others.

Youre statement doesnt even make sense. Yes, this country is 68% Christian (more than half, get over it) at last count, but how do you associate Christians with crime? You may have a point though...Christians are peaceful and complacent. We are taught to love and forgive, so we're not as tough on the criminal element as we should be. Certainly not as tough as say the Phillipines are. Some countries will chop off your limb or head for committing a crime and we could never tolerate that. We have hope that people will eventually see the light....and the criminal element takes advantage of that. So why dont non-Christians take over and start lopping off heads? This might be a safer country, then...

Crimes are committed in the name of religion or at least because the self righteous bigots believe they are doing God's work by slaying the unrighteous from the Crusades and Spanish Inquisition to the present day in many countries.

Because it's overwhelmingly christian? Not exactly, it's what the USA allows them to get away with that makes the crime rate high (and the televangelists).

Well a transperant legal system (go Paris), and effective, timely and trustworthy Police system mean people do report everything so the data is more reflective then other places that might not be as organized.

Also a greather breadth of wealth, population densities, drug's and crazy gun laws might help. It is also easy for people to get lazy when they acquire luxuries and stop being smart.... but I dont think this has anything to do with religion.

"Many violent crimes" is a bit missleading a thing to take a statistic of... Obviously, if people are going about murdering frequently there are going to be less assaults... As for our murder rate compared to other Western society (as it isn't comparable to the majority of all non-European nations) well, kids these days suck at hiding bodies over here...

Michael Moore did a take on this for

Bowling for Columbine movie

see also the slaughter of the Wappinger tribes in Manhattan

"...Rodolf and his men just slaughtered every Wecquaesgeek in the sleeping village at Pavonia without regard for age or sex. The killing by these Dutch "Christians" was especially brutal involving babies hacked to death in their mother's arms, torture, and mutilation. When the attacks began, some Wecquaesgeek made the mistake of fleeing to Fort Amsterdam. They were murdered in cold blood outside the gates and their bodies tossed into the Hudson. De Vries, who had relocated near the Tappan villages at Corlear's Point and apparently bore no hatreds after his plantation on Staten Island had been destroyed by the Raritan, saved some of the Wecquaesgeek who came to him for protection by telling them to hide in forest. In all, Andriansen killed 31 but brought 30 prisoners back to an uncertain fate at Fort Amsterdam. Rodolf butchered 80 Wecquaesgeek and took no prisoners. His soldiers reportedly brought the severed heads of their victims back to the fort and played kickball with them. Preparing for a possible siege, Kieft further inflamed the situation by seizing corn from the Metoac on Long Island and killing three Canarsee warriors in the process..."

If that were the case, then how would you explain all the other overwhelmingly Christian countries that have a lower violent crime rate?

>>Why does the US have the highest rates of many violent crimes?<<

What violent crimes? The U.S. is 9th in rape (BEHIND Australia and Canada), 24th in murder, and 6th in assault (just a shade ahead of New Zealand and the United Kingdom).

EDIT:
Yahoo's filters have rendered the last link useless. Follow the link, then substitute the first three letters in the word "assault" for the three ***.
