I've heard that a U.S. citizen can enter Canada at a land border crossing without a U.S. passport, but cannot reenter the U.S. without one. Does anyone have any info about this? A link to clear info would be appreciated.

You do not need a passport to go between Canada and the united States by land at this time. You can go to the website below to read the regulations for your own peace of mind.

As you have guess, such statements are absurd. It will never happen that way, unless you somehow enter Canada for years before you return. Canada is cooperating with US regulations, and will not ever purposefully allow foreigners into the country who m they know cannot get home again. What would we do with them? We aren't looking to inherit other people's problems.

Right now you only need a passport to fly. Guess what? If you don't have a passport, you can't board an international flight. Pretty simple, no going one way but not the other. I just flew back to Canada from Vegas. Our flight was delayed while they took someones luggage off the flight because they were refused boarding with no passport. No passport --> couldn't fly to Canada.

Next year you will need a passport at land crossings. You will need a passport to get into Canada, and you will need one to get back.

You only need a passport to re-enter the U.S. if you are coming by air. If you are crossing by land, you do not (yet) need a passport. That's scheduled to happen in 2008; however, Congress seems to be re-thinking it a little.
