18. Just as it always has been. Who knows what the upper age might be? Unless it is a flash point war, we will have plenty of warning that we are about to go to war, but I doubt it is going to happen so you can put your mind to rest.

If you want to involve conjecture, then I suppose it depends upon the type of war in which we might find ourselves and where it would be fought. China has a large military, it is modernizing, and has potential. But they lack the ability to project conventional power long distances. They are currently designed to defend the homeland, make short forays into neighboring regions, and to cause regional worries.

As long as the U.S. resists the urge to fight a another land war in Asia, the Chinese are not coming to the U.S. And since it would be folly to attack China, in China, with a ground force, we can rule out this scenario.

The typical scenario studied is one where the Chinese make a strike against Taiwan. By the time we could mobilize to do something about that (mostly Air Force and Navy assets), the action would be largely over. I doubt this will happen soon. We would be handed a fait-accomplis. I, for one, would not view it as practical or possible to retake an island a mere stone's throw from the mainland swarming with a million soldiers.

Another possible scenario arises out of Chinese actions in the Spratly Islands. This is a series of low lying oil rich reefs that are claimed by Taiwan, China, the Phillipines, Viet Nam and probably Malaysia too. Here again, as wars are fought over resources, a flash point exists. Again though, this would be a naval and air exercise as these islands are hardly inhabitable.

But it is too inconvenient to fight the Chinese. Wal-Mart depends too heavily upon their output and the Chinese don't want to upset their economy with an inconvenient war. I don't see a nuclear war. So, short of getting into a land war in Asia, I see no possibility for a draft. But 18 would remain the low end draft age.
Regards.

Well if China somehow used magic to make a navy capable of invading America.

They would probally use the selective service system the way it is set up right now.

And currently the draft is setup to start with those who turn 20 years old during the year of the draft.

The US & China are too smart to go to war - they would both pay a huge price. Should both leaders go crazy & it happen,
I believe the 18 yrs old would stay the minimum but the maximum age would rise to 30-35.

Depends on the reason they reinstate the draft... In extreme cases the draft has been extended down to 12 and up to 60... or even "Anyone who can bear arms" This hasn't happened in The US or Canada... yet. But if needed, it would be done.

If the tactics is to invade China - like what Bush does to Iraq, we are not just going to have no age limit, but also no gender limit! And all the prisoners, gays, tatoos, hippies, antiwar activists... all need to go! Still can't match their 1.3 billion population!

We won't go to war with China.

Why would we. They don't want to. Many Chinese are enjoying their newfound economic freedom. They like most things that Americans like. ... fashion, electronic gadgets, sports, etc. They are rather rational.

We will have much more problems with the Religion of Peace whose members think that blowing themselves up amongst a crowd of schoolchildren is the quickest way to paradise. It's hard to negotiate with people like that.

Let's see: there are 300,000,000 Americans (not counting the illegals) and more than 1,500,000,000 Chinese (not counting Formosa, Chinatown in San Francisco and New York City, so, hey, there would be no age limit. If a person can carry a gun, they would need to start shooting.

Dear Tony,

I believe you have to be 18 to be drafted, but I think if it comes to that, they will take anybody they can get. China will hit us on the west coast and russia on the east. But America will win with the help of God.
