I've always wondered why people husk their corn right in the grocery store before buying it. I could understand if corn was really hit or miss and you had to see if it was good or not.... but 99 times out of 100, the corn is just fine. So what am I missing?

Husking corn is a messy job and people don't want to bring that mess home, so since they can do it right there in the store, it's a lot easier and cleaner

I do take a look under the husk, but I don't take all the husk off. I have wondered that myself. What? Are they looking for earwigs? Do they think it is right to make a huge mess for the produce guy to clean up? What? And don't you think the corn would get bruised on the way home? I want to get to the bottom of this!

Because they don't want to husk it at home and make a mess. Originally, at a farm stand, you'd want to check to see the type of corn and if the ears/kernels looked good. But buying in the grocery, it's really just to avoid the mess

Often (and I mean often), the ear of corn isn't fully developed. Plus, all the corn silk and husk stuff is messy. I would much prefer the store to clean up the mess instead of taking garbage home with me.

The Grocery store I go to leaves a big trash can out so you don't bring the mess home. I think they are just being nice. You can also check for bugs. I've found worms in my corn.

I've watched people ("new" Canadians!) peel back half the husks, look at it, then toss it back and grab another and repeat! WTF? There was NOTHING wrong with the one you just peeled!! But I WON'T buy any that have been husked by these people! If you husk it, BUY it! As for "the mess" suck it up, Princess. Do you also peel your potatoes and carrots in the store before you buy them?? And besides, if I want to 'nuke' my corm in the microwave, I don't want it 'pre-husked'!!

Some people do it because it takes a few ounces off the corn, since some stores sell corn by weight, not cob.

Others look at the kernels to see the color for ripeness or to see if the corn has any bruises.

the stores here all have trash bins next to the corn so it's easy cleanup for the produce people.
i don't know why people husk them in the store though.

They are checking to see if the corn is any good, but not if they are removing the whole husk they are just plain nasty.

Place unhusked corn in a brown paper grocery bag and it will stay fresher longer . You can also freeze corn for up to 9-12 months in the freezer this way.Just make sure bag stays closed .This is how we keep ours from the garden taste real fresh .
