i dont kow that much about it, but it seems like they are going to 3rd world countries and forcing christianity to people who have rich tribal beliefs, im not starting a debate but what good does changing thier religious beliefs do to these people? ( i am aware that they also help feed and eduacate, but why not just help them instead of teaching them about jesus when they already have a releigious view)

Seems many have a misconception of what missionaries do. Yes there are some that simply try to convert others. However many times missionaries go to help the needy. In doing so they can share the love of Christ through their actions. There are several types of missionaries. A lot of missionaries go to other countries to help Christan's that are already there, it may be by building churches and orphanages with them, it may be (like I do) going places where services are actually requested. My mission group goes to countries where we are asked to come. We provide training for Sunday school teachers, to teach them how to run their classrooms effectively (proving them with ideas for crafts, skits, etc). These churches actually ask us to come so we can train their teachers. Its like a seminar but across the ocean. In addition we spend an extra week doing things with the children. By doing this we are showing our love of Christ. All children are invited to participate in the crafts and activities. We do not go over and say you must become Christan. That is not what its about.

There are others who simply want to share Christs love with everyone, this is more in line with what BibleChick45 was talking about above. There are many different types of missionaries, just as there are many types of missions.

Nobody "forces" anyone to become a Christian -it doesn't work that way. A person who doesn't freely choose to follow Christ is not a Christian.

Second, if Christianity is true, and I believe it is, anyone without Jesus Christ is in danger of being eternally separated from God. So their "rich tribal beliefs" or their alternative religious views as you call them, instead of being good for them, are actually sending them to hell. It is also the imperitative of Christians to show love materially (feeding, providing medicine and educating) as well as spiritually.

Now, I realize that many on Y!A don't agree with those statements and will get upset by them. However, you asked why Christian missionaries go and I told you.

Finnally, someone who understands! Most modern day Christians are too ignorant of other cultures and religions. It is fantastic that these people go and help third world countries build houses, and feed them, but changing their beliefs is the most obsurd thing. In fact, it can in many cases destroy a whole culture and people. I actually have a friend whose father was doing missionary work in a remote rainforest in South America in the 50's, and when he came upon a foreign tribe that had never see a White man, the tribe put an arrow through his heart. I am just going to say that my friend's father was NOT trying to give help, but to spread Christianity. It is a disease that to this day is tearing apart cultures and peoples in order for the selfish Christian to get his way. I didn't mean to stir things up too much, but this is the general truth.

Because some Christians believe they're supposed to go out an preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I have a problem with not respecting another person's beliefs or non-beliefs.

Because the only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ, no matter where you are from. You can go to Him poverty stricken or rich, dumb or smart, naked or clothed, but you have to go to Him or you are lost. God's rules not mine. No one forces anything on them. They simply offer the gospel and people decide for themselves. We should send you there since you obviously are not getting it here.

However I personally believe indigenous Christian missionaries are most effective.
