My niece is now 16, and I promised her if she keeps an GPA of an 3.5 or higher I would buy help her buy a car. She wants an SUV. What's a good safe SUV? Has to be moderately priced. I'm not rich. =) Thanks in advance.

20K is alright, no more about 25k? A little over is okay?

To XX - Yeah I thought of that, but I was the one who taught her how to drive, and I have an X5, so she's really used to SUVS. She tried driving her mom's car and she said it seems too low, and she could see much better with an SUV. About the gas price, I can let her work at my resturant for some extra cash.

Bobweb-- thanks! I was thinking about getting an hybrid too, but I just bought a car last year, so I don't want to change just yet, but thanks.

I'd love a new Toyota RAV4 myself. But it's $20K at least. Just for comparison here's some lower cost sedans:

Check gas mileage at http://www.fueleconomy.gov

Combined 23

For yourself, get the new Toyota Camry hybrid at only $1800 more than the standard Camry! It's a much updated and redesigned hybrid that will get great gas mileage.

If she gets an SUV, who is going to pay for her gas? Any small car trumps an SUV, even the hybrids get only "almost" as good as a small car. Besides, at her age, as a new driver, she really should have a smaller car, for the sake of the others on the road (or sidewalk).

SUV and teenagers, not a good combination. Better a big sedan, Buick, Mazda Milenia, Ford taurus, Toyota Solara, Accord, they are safer for young drivers.

Always Toyota. They're reliable, don't break down, and get great MPG. Don't get a brand new SUV b/c they need to be "broken in". Try three plus years old. Good luck!

toyota highlander, nissan murano, most ford models, most honda models...

Go to www.edmunds.com and you can search for an SUV in your price range and it will give safety rating, and pretty much anything else you would like to know
