For best usage of the protein?

Take 20-40 grams of fast-digesting whey protein as soon as possible after your workout. The sooner the better. The generally recognized "window of opportunity" for post-workout nutrient uptake and protein synthasis is around 30 minutes. Try to consume it with a fast digesting carb such as dextrose or maltodextrin (available as glucose tablets from the drug store.) 30-50 grams of carbs will usually suffice.

This will spike your insulin levels (the only time of the day that this is actually a good thing) and drive nutrients into the muscle when they are primed for uptake from your workout.

Best of luck!

Take some about an hour before, but make sure you are getting plenty of protein as soon as you can after you work out before. Post-workout protein is much more important to promote muscle repair.

you shouldnt take protein before working out - you have to take it wright after working out because it repairs muscle and thats the time body needs it the most.
before working out you can eat some complex carbs like whole wheat toast with sugar free preserves or a piece of fruit.

you should be eating carbs pre-workout and protein post-work out. protein comes in most handy immediatly following teh workout and any time after that because your body will use it to help repair the tiny tears in the muscle that occur when you exercise. make sure you are getting 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight you have!
